Moving beyond heroic, trait-based, and universal models of leadership, the book presents leadership as situated action: relational, contextual, morally charged, and bounded. It argues that leadership effectiveness depends not simply on individual competencies, but on the fit between leadership orientations and the constraint architectures within which leaders operate. The book develops the bounded leadership perspective by examining five leadership orientations: anticipatory, visionary, value-creating, mobilising, and self-reflective. These orientations explain how leaders assemble competencies into meaningful strategies of action when agency is limited and decisions involve trade-offs, risks, and legitimacy costs. The analysis also explores political, cultural, informational, ethical, emotional, motivational, and entitlement constraints that shape the real space for leadership action.
