This book provides an introduction to the behaviour and design of composite steel-concrete buildings. In a field where continuous research advancement and code developments occur, it covers the latest design methodologies recommended in Eurocodes and Australian standards for composite construction. Design concepts are introduced and derived from fundamental mechanics to outline a clear overview of available guidelines. The basic concepts describing the response of composite slabs, beams and columns are tied to current developments in industry and academia. This underlines the advantages of composite construction and the benefits of using different levels of refinement in modelling composite systems. Advanced topics are presented where they relate to real structural applications -- for instance, floor systems with web penetrations in the steel beams to accommodate building services, slim floor systems which are commonly used in Europe, and post-tensioned composite floors which are widely specified in Australia. Serviceability, design for dynamics, and the use of both prescriptive and performance based design methods for fire are also covered. Each chapter provides numerous worked examples of design calculations, and the book suits structural engineers as well as senior undergraduates and graduate students.
