ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The Essentials of Psychology collection will collect the best titles of Paid s, starting with The Attachment, by John Bowlby, one of the great longsellers of the imprint. "The publication of this book marks a milestone in the history of psychoanalysis and psychology in general," said The TimesLiterary Supplement at the time of the appearance of the Attachment and Loss trilogy. In Attachment, Bowlby examines the nature of the child's attachment to the mother through his celebrated and careful research into the enormous impact of early separation from the mother figure. It also shows how empirical studies with children have led us to discover very specific behavioural patterns, which have subsequently been confirmed by the biological sciences. Bowlby makes it very clear that human attachment is an instinctive reaction and as transcendental to our survival as feeding and reproduction. Beginning with a discussion of instinctive behavior, its causality, functioning, and ontogeny, Bowlby proceeds to a theoretical formulation of attachment behavior: how it develops, how it is maintained, and what functions it serves.
