Eminent Victorians is a book written by Lytton Strachey, first published in 1918. It is a collection of biographical essays on four prominent figures of the Victorian era: Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Arnold, and General Gordon. Strachey's aim in writing these essays was to challenge the traditional view of these figures as heroic and virtuous, instead presenting them as flawed and complex individuals. In the essay on Cardinal Manning, Strachey portrays him as a manipulative and ambitious figure who used his position in the Catholic Church to further his own interests. Florence Nightingale, the famous nurse and social reformer, is depicted as a difficult and uncompromising woman who often clashed with her colleagues and superiors. Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School, is shown to have had a harsh and authoritarian approach to education, while General Gordon, a military hero, is portrayed as a misguided and eccentric figure who met his demise in the Siege of Khartoum.
