""From Ranke to Toynbee: Five Lectures on Historians and Historiographical Problems"" is a book written by Pieter Geyl, a Dutch historian and professor. The book is a collection of five lectures that Geyl delivered at the University of London in 1946. The lectures focus on the development of historical writing and the major historians who have contributed to its evolution. The book begins with a lecture on Leopold von Ranke, the father of modern historical writing, and his impact on the field. Geyl then moves on to discuss the works of other notable historians such as Jules Michelet, Thomas Carlyle, and Jacob Burckhardt. The later lectures in the book focus on the challenges and controversies that historians face in their work. Geyl discusses the role of bias in historical writing, the importance of context and interpretation, and the challenges of writing about historical events that are still fresh in the public consciousness. Overall, ""From Ranke to Toynbee"" is a thought-provoking exploration of the history of historical writing and the challenges that historians face in their work. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the evolution of historical writing and the complexities of interpreting the past.""Smith College Studies In History, V39.
