GHALIB: LIFE & POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Mirza Asadullah Beg (1797-1869}, known as Ghalib (conqueror), a pen-name or takhallus he adopted in the tradition of all classical Urdu poets, was born in the city of Agra of parents with Turkish aristocratic ancestry. When he was only five his father died in a battle while and his uncle Nasrullah Beg Khan took charge of him. But he lost his uncle also at the age of eight. He lived on state patronage, credit or the generosity of friends. His fame came to him posthumously. He had remarked during his life that although his age had ignored his greatness he would be recognized by later generations. History vindicated his claim. Although he wrote ghazals, qit'as and ruba'is in Persian he is more famous for those written in Urdu. In this selection of both languages of his poems all reflect his sometimes Sufism. 90 pages Introduction to Sufi Poets Series Life & Poems of the following Sufi poets, Translations & Introductions: Paul Smith AMIR KHUSRAU, ANSARI, ANVARI, AL-MA'ARRI, 'ATTAR, ABU SA'ID, AUHAD UD-DIN, BABA FARID, BABA AZFAL, BABA TAHIR, BEDIL, BULLEH SHAH, DARA SHIKOH, GHALIB, HAFIZ, IBN 'ARABI, IBN YAMIN, IBN AL-FARID, IQBAL, 'IRAQI, JAHAN KHATUN, JAMI, KAMAL AD-DIN, KHUSHAL KHAN KHATTAK, KABIR, KHAQANI, KHAYYAM, LALLA DED, MAHSATI, MAJNUN, MAKHFI, MANSUR HALLAJ, MU'IN UD-DIN CHISHTI, NAZIR AKBARABADI, NESIMI, NIZAMI, OBEYD ZAKANI, RAHMAN BABA, RUDAKI, RUMI, SANA'I, SADI, SARMAD, SHAH LATIF, SHAH NI'MAT'ULLAH, SULTAN BAHU, YUNUS EMRE. 90 pages each.
