ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Carlos Fuentes «Don't think that we were happy in the beginning. Don't even dream that we'll be happy in the end. Baltasar Bustos, a law student and employee of the Audiencia of Buenos Aires, enters the chamber of the president of that Court and replaces his newborn son with a black baby, the son of a sick and publicly whipped prostitute. Hours later, the building catches fire, leaving the black boy's body unrecognizable. The legitimate son is given to slaves. It's the time when the youth, enlightened by the readings of Voltaire, Rousseau and Diderot, and driven by the irrepressible spirit of romanticism, launched into the struggle for independence. Three friends, who alternate the narration, describe the preparations for that fight and its battles, the ideas that feed them and the obstacles they suffer to attain their conquests (social, sexual, political). The Campaign, the only novel belonging to the series The Romantic Time, allows us to see the similarities and differences between the struggles for independence in various Latin American countries and the doubts of the leaders (some, real-life characters in those struggles; others fictitious, but equally as powerful), through the always vital prose of Carlos Fuentes.
