For more than six decades, the dramatic history and subsequent transformations of the mining community of Malmberget has been the focal point of Erik Holmstedts equally factual and dedicated photographic practice. Malmberget monitors the latest decades events, when the mines expansion finally brings about the communitys move and demise, through a powerful and unveiled depiction of landscapes being dismantled, houses that no longer are homes, people that no longer belong. The books receptive and dedicated photographic narrative is a unique and compelling document of a societal metamorphosis with few equivalents, a sharply articulated history of the present where Holmstedts perceptive and precise aesthetics guards an époque and a lived reality as it shifts into the past and the uncertain grounds of remembering.
