He learned to draw by copying Tintin and Maurice Sendak, clear graphic influences in the illustrated edition of his book The Dog Hunters. He studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Liverpool Art School, and after a successful career in London advertising he swapped hemispheres to do ads in New Zealand where he now lives in Auckland with his family and a small dog called Joey. In 1999 he set up Adschool at the Media Design School, Auckland's internationally acclaimed course for aspiring young writers and art directors. In 2010 he returned to creative advertising, a job he now shares with his first love - storytelling. In advertising he has won a number of awards including The 2nd Best Radio Commercial Of All Time (Kodacolor Gold) and a Lifetime Achievement Award in the NZ AXIS Advertising Awards 2011.
