The Life and Works of Scottish Architect Thomas Tait – hinnat ja saatavuus

The Life and Works of Scottish Architect Thomas Tait is the first major biography of one of the most influential yet overlooked figures in twentieth-century British architecture. Written by architectural historian John Stewart, this highly illustrated study explores the life, career and legacy of Thomas Tait (1882–1954), the Scottish architect whose pioneering work helped shape the emergence of Modern architecture and British Modernism. From his early years in Paisley and apprenticeship under Sir John James Burnet to his leadership of the renowned practice Burnet, Tait and Lorne, Tait played a central role in transforming British architecture during the interwar period. The book examines many of Tait’s most celebrated projects, including the groundbreaking Kodak Building in London, Selfridges, and the Royal Masonic Hospital. His career culminated with his appointment as lead architect for the Glasgow Empire Exhibition of 1938, for which he produced the masterplan, several exhibition halls and what became known as Tait’s Tower, while his Scottish Office Building in Edinburgh - St Andrews House of 1939 -was undoubtedly the finest British public building of the decade. It reveals how his innovative designs combined Beaux-Arts training, American influences and emerging Modernist ideas to create a distinctive architectural language that bridged tradition and modernity. Drawing on extensive research and rare archival material, this authoritative architectural biography reassesses Tait’s contribution to Scottish architecture, British architecture and the Modern Movement. Essential reading for anyone interested in architectural history, design history, architectural heritage, urban history and the built environment, this book restores Thomas Tait to his rightful place among the leading architects of twentieth-century Britain.
