The Story of Instruction: The Church, The Renaissances, and The Reformations is a comprehensive historical account of the evolution of education and instruction in Western civilization, from the early Christian era to the Reformation period. Written by Ernest Carroll Moore, a prominent American educator and historian, this book explores the role of the church, the impact of the Renaissance, and the transformative effects of the Protestant Reformation on the development of instructional methods and educational institutions. Moore traces the origins of instruction in the early Christian church, examining the role of monastic schools and the emergence of universities in the Middle Ages. He then explores the impact of the Renaissance on education, highlighting the rise of humanism, the development of printing, and the growth of secular learning. Finally, he delves into the radical changes brought about by the Protestant Reformation, including the rise of vernacular languages, the emphasis on individual interpretation of scripture, and the proliferation of new schools and universities. Throughout the book, Moore provides detailed accounts of key figures and movements in the history of education, including Erasmus, Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the Jesuits. He also explores the social and political contexts in which these figures and movements emerged, shedding light on the complex interplay between education and broader historical trends. Written in a clear and engaging style, The Story of Instruction is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of education and its impact on Western civilization.
