The story is set in the city of Gloucester, England, and follows the tale of a poor tailor who is commissioned to make a coat for the mayor's wedding. However, the tailor falls ill and is unable to finish the coat, leaving it half-done. One night, while the tailor is asleep, the mice that live in his shop come to his rescue and finish the coat for him. The tailor awakens to find the coat completed and is overjoyed. He then discovers a note from the mice thanking him for his kindness to them and explaining how they had completed the coat. The story is a heartwarming tale of kindness and friendship, with beautiful illustrations by Potter that bring the characters and setting to life.
