A citizen's guide to America's most debated policy-in-waiting There are few issues as consequential in the lives of Americans as healthcare--and few issues more politically vexing. Every single American will interact with the healthcare system at some point in their lives, and most people will find that interaction less than satisfactory. And yet for every dollar spent in our economy, 18 cents go to healthcare. What are we paying for, exactly? Healthcare policy is notoriously complex, but what Americans want is simple: good healthcare that's easy to use and doesn't break the bank. Polls show that a majority of Americans want the government to provide universal health coverage to all Americans. What's less clear is how to get there. Medicare for All is the leading proposal to achieve universal health coverage in America. But what is it exactly? How would it work? More importantly, is it practical or practicable? This book goes beyond partisan talking points to offer a serious examination of how Medicare for All would transform the way we give, receive, and pay for healthcare in America.

Healing Politics: A Doctor's Journey Into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic
From a rising voice in progressive politics, a combination of memoir and science diagnosing the biggest challenges facing America and laying out a way forward The son of Egyptian immigrants, Abdul El-Sayed grew up feeling a pressing responsibility to help others. He threw himself into the study of medicine and public health and excelled--winning a Rhodes Scholarship, earning two doctoral degrees, and landing a tenure-track position at Columbia University. At 30, he became the youngest city health official in America, tasked with rebuilding Detroit's health department after years of austerity policies. But El-Sayed found himself disillusioned. He could heal the sick but not fix the social and economic conditions causing illness in the first place. So he left health for politics, running for governor of Michigan in 2018. In Healing Politics, Abdul El-Sayed traces the life of a young idealist, weaving together powerful personal stories and fascinating forays into history and science. Marrying his unique perspective with the science of epidemiology, El-Sayed diagnoses an underlying epidemic afflicting our country, an epidemic of insecurity. And to heal the rifts this epidemic has created, he lays out a new direction for the progressive movement. This is a bold, personal, and compellingly original book from a prominent young leader.
