Periodontal Medicine is an emerging branch of Periodontology that focuses on the relationships between periodontal health/disease and systemic health/disease. This pioneering approach of periodontal medicine has helped many researchers to renew their attention towards focal infection theory and the relationships between chronic periodontitis and systemic health. Periodontal medicine is an integral part of clinical periodontal research. Research activity in this field has grown immensely since the early 2000's.
