Twenty years after their initial conquests, d'Artagnan and his three musketeers are the subjects of Alexandre Dumas' book "Twenty Years After." The novel focuses on friendship-related topics as well as the conflicting forces of love vs hate and loyalty versus betrayal. The four friends discuss their differences in perspectives on working together as well as their individual disappointments. Despite their disputes, the four swear to stay friends and frequently come to each other's rescue throughout the book. Additionally, they collaborate in an unsuccessful effort to stop Charles, King of England, from being executed. By kidnapping Mazarin, the Musketeers are able to persuade him to accept the demands made by the citizens of Paris, bringing about peace in the city. However, the four companions are able to outsmart Mordaunt, and the fiend is ultimately put to death by Athos as he attempts to drown Athos. While Porthos receives the coveted title of baron, D'Artagnan receives a financial allowance and the rank of captain. Raoul, the son of Athos, is appointed to a regiment in the army, and Aramis is able to secure honors for a woman he knows.

The Vicomte de Bragelonne By Alexandre DumasThe Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later is a novel by Alexandre Dumas. It is the third and last of The d'Artagnan Romances, following The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. It appeared first in serial form between 1847 and 1850. In the English translations, the 268 chapters of this large volume are usually subdivided into three, but sometimes four or even six individual books. In three-volume English editions the volumes are entitled The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valli re, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Each volume is roughly the length of the original The Three Musketeers. In four-volume editions volume names remain except that Louise de la Valli re and The Man in the Iron Mask move from second and third volumes to third and fourth, with Ten Years Later becoming the second volume. After 35 years of loyal service, d'Artagnan resigns as lieutenant of the Musketeers as he perceives the young king Louis XIV as weak-willed. He resolves to aid the exiled Charles II to retake the throne of England, unaware that Athos is attempting the same. With their assistance Charles II is restored to the throne and d'Artagnan is rewarded richly. In France, Cardinal Mazarin has died, leaving Louis to assume power with Jean-Baptiste Colbert as his finance minister. Colbert has an intense hatred for his superior the king's Superintendent of Finances, Nicolas Fouquet, and tries to bring about his fall. He brings to the king's attention that Fouquet is fortifying his fief of Belle le secretly. Louis persuades d'Artagnan to re-enter his service, and tasks him to investigate Belle le, promising him a substantial salary and promotion to Captain of the King's Musketeers on his return. Louis, finally growing into a decisive ruler, also accepts an offer relayed by Athos from Charles II to marry Louis' brother Philippe I, Duke of Orl ans to Charles' sister Henrietta Anne Stuart. D'Artagnan confirms that Belle le is being fortified and the architect ostensibly in charge is Porthos, though the drawings show the handwriting of Aramis, who is now the bishop of Vannes. Aramis, suspicious of d'Artagnan, sends Porthos back to Paris to warn Fouquet, whilst tricking d'Artagnan into searching for Porthos around Vannes.

The Three Musketeers By Alexandre DumasThe Three Musketeers (French: Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a historical adventure novel written in 1844 by French author Alexandre Dumas. It is in the swashbuckler genre, which has heroic, chivalrous swordsmen who fight for justice. Set between 1625 and 1628, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan (a character based on Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan) after he leaves home to travel to Paris, hoping to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Although d'Artagnan is not able to join this elite corps immediately, he is befriended by the three most formidable musketeers of the age - Athos, Porthos and Aramis, "the three inseparables"- and becomes involved in affairs of state and at court. Dumas presents his novel as one of a series of recovered manuscripts, turning the origins of his romance into a little drama of its own. In the Preface, he tells of being inspired by a scene in M moires de Monsieur d'Artagnan (1700), a historical novel by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras, printed by Pierre Rouge in Amsterdam, which Dumas discovered during his research for his history of Louis XIV. According to Dumas, the incident where d'Artagnan tells of his first visit to M. de Tr ville, captain of the Musketeers, and how, in the antechamber, he encountered three young B arnese with the names Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, made such an impression on him that he continued to investigate. That much is true-the rest is fiction: He finally found the names of the three musketeers in a manuscript titled M moire de M. le comte de la F re, etc. Dumas "requested permission" to reprint the manuscript permission was granted: Now, this is the first part of this precious manuscript which we offer to our readers, restoring it to the title which belongs to it, and entering into an engagement that if (of which we have no doubt) this first part should obtain the success it merits, we will publish the second immediately. In the meanwhile, since godfathers are second fathers, as it were, we beg the reader to lay to our account, and not to that of the Comte de la F re, the pleasure or the ennui he may experience. This being understood, let us proceed with our story.
