Testo redatto da Alfonso Maria de' Liguori (Napoli, 27 settembre 1696 - Nocera de' Pagani, 1 agosto 1787) stato un vescovo cattolico e compositore italiano, fondatore della Congregazione del Santissimo Redentore, autore di opere letterarie, teologiche e di celebri melodie natalizie, tra cui la famosissima "Tu scendi dalle stelle". Fu beatificato nel 1816 e canonizzato nel 1839. Papa Pio IX lo proclam Dottore della Chiesa nel 1871 mentre Pio XII nel 1950 gli confer il titolo di "celeste Patrono di tutti i confessori e moralisti". Essendo stato proclamato Dottore della Chiesa a 84 anni dalla morte, il pi celebre Dottore della Chiesa di sempre e l'unico cui il titolo sia stato attribuito a meno di un secolo dalla morte. La sua memoria ricorre il 1 agosto. Il corpo di Sant'Alfonso riposa nell'omonima Basilica a Pagani (SA).
