Considered by some to have contributed to the birth of modernism, "Ubu Roi" is a comical play that is at once a wild and bizarre work which overturned the cultural rules, norms, and conventions of its day. A precursor to the "Theatre of the Absurd", the play satirizes the complacency, greed, and abuse of power by the ruling class. Largely a parody of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" as wells as in part several other Shakespearian plays, "Ubu Roi" follows the titular Ubu whose wife convinces him to murder the King of Poland and most of the Royal family. Through the use of dialogue that appears both obscene and childish Jarry evokes a deeper symbolic meaning. In addition to "Ubu Roi", Alfred Jarry wrote two sequels, "Ubu Cuckolded", and "Ubu in Chains", which were never performed in his lifetime. According to Jarry this trilogy can be described by the philosophy of "pataphysics" or the "science of imaginary solutions". This collection of plays exhibits Alfred Jarry's comical genius and established him as a progenitor of the modernist literary movement. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translations of Beverley Keith and G. Legman.

First published in 1899, P re Ubu's Almanac is Alfred Jarry's answer to the annually published almanac, a format which provided ordinary people with the forecasts that helped them tend their crops, fish their waters & mark their religious holidays. Offering a unique and irreverent insight into the cultural and political landscape of Paris on the cusp of the 20th century, Ubu's Almanac was created by Jarry in 1898 along with some friends, artistic contemporaries and colleagues at the Mercure de France, including Claude Terrasse, Pierre Bonnard (who created the illustrations), Rachilde, Pierre Quillard, Andr -Ferdinand H rold & Marcel Colli re. It's a multidimensional collage of found text, in-jokes, puns and contemporary cultural references, written at the height of the political scandal that would come to be known as the Dreyfus Affair. cet ge-l , lequel il conserva toute sa vie, le docteur Faustroll tait un homme de taille moyenne, soit, pour tre exactement v ridique, de (8 1010 + 109 + 4 108 + 5 106) diam tres d'atomes; de peau jaune d'or, au visage glabre, sauf des moustaches vert de mer, telles que les portait le roi Saleh; les cheveux alternativement, poil par poil, blond cendr et tr s noir, ambigu t auburnienne changeante avec l'heure du soleil; les yeux, deux capsules de simple encre crire, pr par e comme l'eau-de-vie de Dantzick, avec des spermatozo des d'or dedans. Il tait imberbe, sauf ses moustaches, par l'emploi bien entendu des microbes de la calvitie, saturant sa peau des aines aux paupi res, et qui lui rongeaient tous les bulbes, sans que Faustroll e t craindre la chute de sa chevelure ni de ses cils, car ils ne s'attaquent qu'aux cheveux jeunes.
