This book introduces the major ideas of projective geometry through clear explanations, visual intuition, and hands-on problem solving. Projective geometry opens a window into the deeper patterns of space, perspective, and form. While Euclidean geometry guides familiar constructions—drawing points, lines, and circles with a straightedge and compass—projective geometry goes further, encompassing hyperbolic and elliptic geometries and revealing the rules behind the way we see the world. Why do railway tracks appear to converge in the distance? Why does a tilted coin look like an ellipse? These are not illusions—they are manifestations of projective geometry at work. Readers will explore classical constructions and fundamental geometrical ideas through a fresh lens, building towards an exploration of key projective principles such as duality and invariance. Highlighting real-world applications in mathematics, physics, computer science, art and architecture, the book presents projective geometry not just as a mathematical discipline, but as a way of seeing. Whether you are a student, teacher, or curious mind, this book offers a new perspective on geometry—not just what we measure, but how we perceive and understand the world around us.

This book uncovers the intriguing, surprising, and enlightening aspects of mathematics that are rarely encountered in school curricula, aiming to inspire in the reader a more positive view of the subject. Mathematics is one of the most essential disciplines we study, yet it is also one of the most widely disliked, with many people seemingly proud to admit they struggled with the subject at school. These sentiments are often rooted not in lack of ability, but in how the subject was taught. Pressures from grades and standardized testing have frequently reduced mathematics education to memorization and exam preparation, leaving little opportunity to explore the subject's true beauty and depth. The chapters in this book highlight a variety of mathematical topics designed to spark curiosity rather than anxiety. We begin with numbers, uncovering elegant patterns and surprising relationships that are seldom discussed in traditional classrooms. Arithmetic is revisited with clever mental techniques that can be more efficient than using a computer. Geometry is explored as a natural part of the world around us, offering insights into visual reasoning that extend far beyond diagrams on a page. A chapter on logic sharpens reasoning skills and shows how mathematical thinking applies to everyday decision-making. The book concludes with a survey of some fascinating cultural and historical aspects of mathematics. Ultimately, this book aims to replace fear or indifference with curiosity and appreciation. By revealing mathematics as a subject rich with wonder and insight, it seeks to help readers rediscover excitement for learning—and, in doing so, empower them to pass that enthusiasm on to others, especially the next generation.

Revolutions in Mathematics charts the origins and development of key mathematical concepts that have laid the foundation for the advanced technological world we enjoy today. This is a journey through thousands of years of human discovery, effort, and struggle. Behind the simple elegance of everyday mathematics lies a long, winding path filled with false starts, questionable beliefs, rivalries, and persistence in the face of sickness, despair, and doubt. This book brings those human stories to life, showing how determination and sacrifice shaped the mathematical breakthroughs we now take for granted. At the same time, it offers a clear, accessible understanding of the ideas themselves — designed for the general reader, not the specialist. By blending history with insight, Revolutions in Mathematics hopes to not only deepen appreciation for the role of mathematics in our world, but also spark curiosity to explore further into mathematics, science, and technology.

This book explores the versatile concept of maxima and minima — extremes and optimal values — across a broad spectrum of mathematics. Far from being limited to calculus, the concept of extremes is applicable to nearly every field of mathematics, including geometry, arithmetic, algebra, and stochastics, offering powerful tools for problem solving. The first part of the book introduces a wide range of applications of the method of extremes, showing how it can be used to tackle problems both in everyday life and in mathematical contexts. The second, larger part focuses on solving extreme value problems without relying on derivatives, instead building reasoning and proof from first principles. Here, special emphasis is placed on geometry, where questions of optimality often reveal surprising insights about shapes and figures. By approaching mathematics through the lens of extremes, readers will gain a deeper understanding of core concepts and discover fresh ways to enrich both learning and teaching.

This book offers high school teachers and students a broad and engaging look at an often-maligned subject — mathematics. Expanding beyond strictly defined curriculums, Fun Math: Problem Solving Beyond the Classroom explores additional topics that can inspire and motivate students to better appreciate the importance and beauty of mathematics. The first four chapters present novel examples in four integral areas of the mathematics curriculum, namely arithmetic, logic, algebra, and geometry. The last two chapters expose readers to topics in algebra and geometry that have been neglected at the secondary school level. Throughout the book, the focus is on introducing problem-solving techniques that will be useful in everyday life. With over 300 problems and carefully worked solutions, the book aims to foster a greater appreciation for mathematics through an exploration of useful and fascinating topics rarely addressed in the classroom. In other words, you can have fun with mathematics!

There is little opportunity in classrooms today for teachers to explore the amazing applications of mathematics outside the curriculum. This book is intended to show how mathematics manifests itself in areas that most people are unaware of. One can even revel in the history of how our number system evolved and how that has enabled us to define the beauty in mathematics as well as in art, architecture, nature, and beyond. The first two chapters of this book introduce the Fibonacci numbers and investigate their amazing relationships and applications in our general environment. The following four chapters focus on the Golden Ratio and the Golden Rectangle, exploring how they manifest all around us, often hiding in plain sight: in everything from architectural wonders such as the Taj Mahal to coin design, and from Greek vases to petal formation. We conclude our enjoyable journey through these mathematical wonders by considering conic sections and how they explain many aspects of everyday life, such as radar dishes, headlight reflectors, and whispering halls. This exposure to aspects of mathematics that are usually bypassed in the school curriculum will provide high school students, teachers, and general readers with an opportunity to truly appreciate the power and beauty of mathematics.

Our physical world is embedded in a geometric environment. Plane geometry has many amazing wonders beyond those that are briefly touched on at school. The circle, one of the basic aspects of geometry, has a plethora of unexpected curiosities, which the authors present in an easily understandable fashion requiring nothing more than the very basics of school geometry to appreciate these curiosities and their justifications or proofs. The book is intended to be widely appreciated by a general readership, whose love for geometry should be greatly enhanced through exploring these many unexpected relationships. Geometric Gems is also suitable for mathematics teachers, to enhance the education of their students with these highly motivating circle properties.

Geometry is one of the most beautiful aspects of mathematics. This beauty is because you can 'see' geometry at work. Most people are exposed to the very basic elements of geometry throughout their schooling with the most concentrated study in the secondary school curriculum. High schools in the United States offer one year of concentrated study of geometry that shows students how a mathematician functions, since everything that is accepted beyond the basic axioms must be proved. Unfortunately, as the course is only one year long, there is still very much in geometry left unexplored for the general audience. That is the challenge of this book, in which we will present a plethora of amazing geometric relationships. We begin with the special relationships of the Golden Ratio, before considering unexpected concurrencies and collinearities. Next, we present some surprising results that arise when squares and similar triangles are placed on triangle sides, followed by a discussion of concyclic points and the relationships between circles and various linear figures. Moving on to more advanced aspects of linear geometry, we consider the geometric wonders of polygons. Finally, we address geometric surprises and fallacies, before concluding with a chapter on the useful concept of homothety, which is not included in the American year-long course in geometry.
