Two friends are on a canoe trip down the Danube River. At one point, they see a traveler in his boat. The man appears to be warning them and ultimately crosses himself before hurtling forward on the river, out of sight. During the night, mysterious forces emerge from within the forest, including dark shapes which seem to trace the narrator's consciousness, tapping sounds outside their tent, shifting gong-like noises, bizarre shadows, and the appearance that the willows have changed location. The precise nature of the mysterious entities in "The Willows" is unclear, and they appear at times malevolent or treacherous, while at times simply mystical and almost divine. Overall, the story suggests that the landscape is actually a frontier of another world.

Premise: Dr. Cathcart and his nephew Mr. Simpson go on a moose hunting trip deep into the wilderness of northern Canada with their guides Hank Davis and the French Canadian Joseph D fago, along with their Indian cook, Punk. They split up to cover more ground, Dr. Cathcart with Hank and Simpson with D fago, but the rumor of a creature that wanders the wild where they are headed begins to stir in their minds. Themes: The Wendigo is a story of the unknown, not only the stories and rumors of something in the wilderness, but the sheer anxiety of going into unexplored territory and living off the land and by your wits. This is a classic monster tale that asks the question, "Who or what is the monster here?" The changes someone goes through when facing uninhabited lands can be thrilling, but it can also take a toll on your mind. At least, that is what The Wendigo says to us. The "call of the wild" can bring about a ferocity in a man that makes him lose a little of himself in the wild. And when brought back into civilization, that part of himself may not come back.

The Damned by Algernon Blackwood is a great haunted house story along the lines of Turn of the Screw and the Haunting of Hill House. A brother and sister spend some time with a recently widowed friend. Her deceased husband was a strict fire and brimstone preacher who damned everyone who didn't believe like him to hell. His less strong-willed wife fell under his spell, but now the house seems to be haunted by...a shadow? Goblins? Ghostly pagans? Or many different things at once. This is a suspenseful, gripping tale about the tyranny of closed mindedness disguised as a horror novel.

Two friends are midway on a canoe trip down the Danube River. Throughout the story Blackwood personifies the surrounding environment-river, sun, wind-and imbues them with a powerful and ultimately threatening character. Most ominous are the masses of dense, desultory, menacing willows, which "moved of their own will as though alive, and they touched, by some incalculable method, my own keen sense of the horrible." "The Willows" is one of Algernon Blackwood's best known short stories. American horror author H. P. Lovecraft considered it to be the finest supernatural tale in English literature. "The Willows" is an example of early modern horror and is connected within the literary tradition of weird fiction.

First published in 1907, this is Algernon Blackwood's first collection of short stories, and it takes on what is probably the oldest theme in horror fiction: the haunted house. The Empty House contains 10 stories, all of which feature mysterious, brooding locales: it's not impossible that the opening of the title story, which I quote at the beginning, could have inspired the famous beginning of Shirley Jackson's later novel, The Haunting of Hill House.

One of the former British writers of supernatural tales in the twentieth century, Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) wrote stories in which the slow accumulation of telling details produced a foreboding atmosphere of almost unendurable tension. Blackwood's literary renown began in 1908 with the publication of a highly successful collection of stories, John Silence - Physician Extraordinary, featuring a "psychic doctor." This volume contains the first three of the John Silence stories: A Psychical Invasion, Ancient Sorceries, and The Nemesis of Fire.
