Algernon Blackwood was a short story writer and novelist, most noted for his stories "The Willows" and "The Wendigo". Here, presented for your enjoyment, is one of his great novels, "The Centaur". O'Malley is travelling on a cruise through the Greek islands when he meets two mysterious men, a father and a son. O'Malley finds these handsome men strangely fascinating and is happy to discover the will all be sharing a cabin aboard the ship. While walking on the shore tricks of light seem to join the pair into a single being; at times a third much larger being seems to join them. Is O'Malley hallucinating, going mad, or is a dark and ancient force at work. This is a Print-On-Demand reprint of the original book. Every effort has been made to replicate this text as faithfully as possible, including obsolete and variant spellings and other inconsistencies. This version was originally printed in 1911.

Jimbo's governess ought to have known better -- but she didn't. If she had, Jimbo would never have met with the adventures that subsequently came to him. Thus, in a roundabout sort of way, the child ought to have been thankful to the governess; and perhaps, in a roundabout sort of way, he was. But that comes at the far end of the story, and is doubtful at best; and in the meanwhile the child had gone through his suffering, and the governess had in some measure expiated her fault; so that at this stage it is only necessary to note that the whole business began because the Empty House happened to be really an Empty House -- not the one Jimbo's family lived in, but another of which more will be known in due course. . . .
