Vårt sätt att leva hotar i värsta fall människans överlevnad. Den typ av samhälle som vi nu lever i kan inte bestå. Det bygger på att vi för­brukar Jordens begränsade resurser och dessutom förstör vår egen livsmiljö. Vår ständiga inriktning mot materiell tillväxt som idag leder till allt högre förbrukning och allt större miljöförstörelse tycks inte förenlig med de naturgivna förutsättningarna på Jorden. Vårt samhälle kommer därför i grunden att förändras, vare sig vi vill det eller ej. När vi tär på Jordens resurser berövar vi kanske framtida generationer möjligheter att alls kunna leva som människor. Är vi på väg att förändra den miljö som ger oss mat och andra livsnödvändigheter så mycket att förutsättningarna för mänskligt liv försvinner? Att vår art dör ut, som många andra arter gjort före oss? Sådana frågor måste ställas. Misstanken att det finns en sådan risk gör att grundläggande frågor väcks om vår existens alltså frågor som verkligen är existentiella. Många hoppas att den mänskliga förmågan att hitta nya lösningar på de svårigheter som dyker upp skall bemästra framtida bekymmer. Man hyser tilltro till teknisk utveckling, ändrade personliga livsstilar, globala överenskommelser om hänsyn till de planetära gränserna och liknande. Vi, som skrivit denna bok tror att sådana försök för att verkligen lyckas måste förankras i gemensam eftertanke kring hur världen faktiskt fungerar. Vi menar att dagens situation utmanar våra sätt att tolka den mänskliga existensen och dess villkor. Vår bild av världen och av oss själva behöver ifrågasättas och begrundas på djupet.
