The volume examines one of the most sensitive issues in the contemporary diplomatic history of the eastern Mediterranean, namely, the nexus between Greece, Turkey, the Cyprus problem and NATO in the crucial period between 1973 and 1988. Beginning with the emergence of the Aegean dispute in 1973 and ending with the most comprehensive attempt to date to solve the Greek–Turkish conflict in the wake of the Davos rapprochement process in 1988. The analysis in this book goes back to developments that occurred in the first half of the 20th century.

The study provides an extensive legal, geopolitical and historical analysis of all controversial issues making up the Greek-Turkish maritime dispute: the delimitation of territorial waters, the national airspace, the delineation of exclusive economic zones and continental shelf as well as the issue of military presence on the Eastern Aegean islands and its relation to the Greek sovereignty over them. By immersing thoroughly into international jurisprudence, international treaties and historical facts, the book offers a detailed survey of legal precedents and legal regimes over similar issues worldwide. In this way, the reader has the opportunity to ascertain where every single legal and historical argument has been drawn from and its relevance in the international jurisprudence. Consequently, it follows the evolution of the dispute together with all its twists from 1973 to 2022 that saw a new low in the historically tense Greek-Turkish relationship. The book finally re-examines the dispute in the light of the new green energy geopolitics and the ongoing climate crisis and comes up with some suggestions for an alternative paradigm of co-existence in the Aegean Sea which in the author’s view is urgent and inevitable.

''Ostpolitik'', which translates to ‘‘Opening to the East’’ is used to describe the policy of conducting affairs with the Soviet Bloc. The Caspian Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean are two regions with abundant energy resources. Their gas routes to Europe intersect and actors, exporters, pipeline owners and operators, transit states and downstream customers are connected to one another in a web of political and economic interdependencies. More significantly, these regions have been plagued by deep-seated ethnic conflicts and disputes: namely, the two oldest registered in the United Nations (the Cyprus and the Arab-Israeli Conflicts), the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, the Syria War and numerous tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Caspian Sea and the Balkan regions. This book investigates what impact these energy resources have had on the respective conflicts and disputes, as well as their influence on the power game between the EU and Russia.

Die Beziehungen zwischen der DDR und Griechenland bilden ein vollig unbekanntes Kapitel des Kalten Krieges, das sich zwar im Rahmen der West-Ost-Konfrontation abspielte, aber keinesfalls den offiziellen Spielregeln der vordergrundigen ideologischen Auseinandersetzung folgte. In der Darstellung werden die fast 40 Jahre (1948-1989) wahrenden Beziehungen zwischen drei Landern, DDR-Griechenland-Zypern, und funf Parteien, SED-KKE-EDA-AKEL-PASOK untersucht, dabei wird deutlich, dass die damaligen formellen politischen Machtverhaltnisse in Europa auch Schattenseiten hatten, die jenseits ihrer ideologischen Legitimitat standen. Wahrend die jeweiligen Akteure darum bemuht waren, offiziell ihre ideologische und moralische Integritat unter Beweis zu stellen, waren sie gleichzeitig darauf bedacht, Beziehungen zu knupfen und zu pflegen, die nicht den nach aussen propagierten Grundsatzen, sondern den kuhlen Interessen der Realpolitik und des Handelsprofits folgten. Auf der Basis von neuen Quellen hat der Verfasser historische Entwicklungen neu interpretiert und Hintergrundsmanover rekonstruiert, die es eigentlich so nie hatte geben durfen. Der Band ist aus einer Mannheimer Dissertation hervorgegangen.
