Immigration is one of the most polarising and political consequential issues in 21st-century Europe. What Europeans Think About Immigration and Why It Matters offers a powerful and comprehensive analysis of the matter, mapping not only what Europeans think about immigration, but why they think it, how those attitudes are formed, and what they mean for the political future of Europe. Drawing on vast quantities of high-quality survey data spanning decades, countries, and crises, and combining insights from political science, psychology, sociology, and public policy, James Dennison and Andrew Geddes provide a new, interdisciplinary framework for understanding immigration attitudes. They explain how early-life socialization, emotional predispositions, values, media, economic conditions, and national contexts interact to shape how Europeans perceive immigration. With attitudes shown to be more stable, multidimensional, and resistant to change than many politicians, journalists, and policymakers assume, the book debunks common myths and reveals the complex interplay between beliefs, feelings, and facts that drive public opinion. Beyond identifying what people think, the book offers a theoretical and empirical framework for understanding salience—why immigration becomes politically important at some times but not others. It explains how and why immigration rises up the public agenda, why it resonates with some voters more than others, and what this means for party competition, policymaking, and the communication strategies used by politicians, journalists, and activists. Dennison and Geddes explore how salience, not just sentiment, has been key to the rise of radical-right parties and to far-reaching shifts in national and EU-level migration policies. This book is essential reading for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone seeking to understand the deeper cognitive, emotional, and structural forces that shape how we see and govern migration.

International migration has become a salient concern in global politics but there is also significant variation in governance responses. By focusing on four key world regions -- Europe, North America, South America, and Southeast Asia -- this book explores the underlying factors that shape governance responses. Rather than focusing on the more visible outputs or outcomes of governance processes such as laws and policies, this book opens the 'black box' of migration governance to reveal how understandings and representations of the causes and effects of migration held by key governance actors in these four regions have powerful effects, not only on governance outcomes, but more broadly on the prospects for global migration governance. By doing so, the book shows how migration governance systems through their operation and effects can shape migration -- in its various forms -- and the lived experiences of migrants

International migration and mobility whether from outside the EU or in the form of free movement by EU citizens are controversial and potentially divisive issues that are and will remain at the top of the EU’s political agenda. This fully revised and updated text analyses the complex and often controversial nature of policymaking in this fast-developing field, and brings the discussion up to date as the ramifications of the so-called ‘migration crisis’ continue to unfold. It offers an exploration of the dynamics of migration and mobility in the EU including different types of migration; the EU’s policy framework within which national policies are now located; and considers the widespread notion and public perception of policy failure in this field. Unique in its portrayal of policy responses to migration in Europe, this text will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of the politics of migration, European integration and the Politics of EU, as well as anyone with an interest in this fascinating policy area.

This book explores the interaction of the EU in Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, and Macedonia in three key policy sectors – cohesion, border managements and the environment – and assesses the degree to which the European Union’s engagement with the democracies of South East Europe has promoted Europeanization and Multi-Level Governance. Although there is a tendency to view the Balkans as peripheral, this book argues that South East European states are central to what the EU is and aspires to become, and goes to the heart of many of the key issues confronting the EU. It compares changing modes of governance in the three policy areas selected because they are contentious issues in domestic politics and have trans-boundary policy consequences, in which there is significant EU involvement. The book draws on over 100 interviews conducted to explore actor motivation, preferences and perceptions in the face of pressure to adapt from the EU and uses Social Network Analysis. Timely and informative, this book considers broader dilemmas of integration and enlargement at a time when the EU’s effectiveness is under close scrutiny. The European Union and South East Europe will be of interest to students and scholars of European politics, public policy, and European Union governance and integration.

Britain's relationship with the EU has always been riddled with doubt, scepticism and awkwardness. This much-needed new book examines why, how and with what effect the EU has become such a contentious issue in UK politics. It places the debate in historical context by starting with an overview of debates about membership in the 1950s and 1960s and then goes on to examine the impact of Britain's membership since 1973 across core policy areas, including economic and monetary union, agriculture, and foreign and security policy. Andrew Geddes outlines major changes in the scope of the European project and assesses how central, devolved and local governments have responded to the EU. The book also assesses the EU's impact on domestic policies, assessing debates within and between the main parties and charting the rise of Euroscepticism as a key trend in contemporary British politics. Engagingly written, this text provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis both of the EU's impact on Britain and of Britain's contribution to the EU.

This book analyses the patterns of migration flow since the end of the Cold War and relates these to political and policymaking processes at EU level and among EU member states. It delivers an original and innovative perspective on the new dynamics of migration policy and the policy dilemmas facing European politicians.

Migration is at the heart of the contemporary European Union. This new edition addresses three key questions that underpin EU responses to migration policy. First, what role does the EU play in the regulation of migration? Second, how and why have EU measures developed to promote the integration of migrants and their descendants? Third, what impact do EU measures on migration and asylum have on new member states and non member states? The updated edition covers important recent developments, addressing new migration flows and the external dimension of EU action on migration and asylum and placing in all these in the context of a 'wider' Europe. Andrew Geddes provides comprehensive analysis of the EU’s free movement framework, of the development of co-operation on immigration and asylum policy, of the mobilisation by groups seeking to represent migrant’s interests in EU decision-making, the interface between migration, welfare and the EU’s social dimension, and the impact of enlargement on migration and asylum. This innovative and original analysis of the European dimension of immigration policy is essential reading for scholars of European integration, the politics of immigration and the prospects for new patterns of migrant inclusion at member state and EU level.

The fifth edition of British Politics is a significantly expanded work that draws on the contribution of three new political scientists and redresses the balance between the historical context of British Politics and key theoretical debates. British Politics 5/e overcomes the traditional problem of looking at Britain in isolation and the narrow, institution-based approach to politics by re-focusing on the international context in which Britain operates, and the way in which globalization, Europeanization, and the marketization of the state have conditioned the nature of politics today. The text is both theoretically and practically informed, combining a descriptive account of the institutions and processes of the British political system with a lively and engaging discussion of new issues and policies. It addresses numerous contemporary topics, including the impact of a third term Labour Government; the threat to individual liberty in a post-9/11 world; the London 2005 bombings; Britain's destiny as a European partner; the implications of race and asylum-seeking; the growth and effect of direct action on the political system; and a health-check on democracy in an age of electoral decline. It also considers contemporary issues surrounding the public service; participation and representation; and democracy and accountability; while providing a detailed and accessible examination of a range of policy areas (economic, welfare, transport, education, law, immigration and defence) based on recent interviews conducted by the authors themselves with key political actors. Migration is at the heart of the contemporary EU. This book addresses the two key questions that underpin EU responses to migration policy. Firstly, the efforts to control immigration and secondly, the chances for inclusion of migrants and their descendants. Andrew Geddes provides detailed analysis of the EU's free movement framework, of the development of co-operation on immigration and asylum policy, of the mobilisation by groups seeking to represent migrant's interests in EU decision-making, and of the interface between migration, welfare and the EU's social dimension. This innovative and original analysis of the Europeanisation of immigration policy is essential reading for scholars of European integration, the politics of immigration and the prospects for social inclusion and citizenship at EU level.
