Andrew Martin

A compendium of fascinating and evocative new writing on railway travel and history. Telling of little known journeys and uncovered histories on railway routes around the world - from the UK, Europe and Africa to North America, the Middle East and Asia. From Myanmar's highlands to the British Pennines, from slow travel between coffee plantations in Borneo to a cross-continent odyssey on African railways, from the pioneers of the American West to European trains in war, this is a new prism through which to explore human lives, and global landscapes, politics and history. The Untold Railway Stories is a testament to both the joy and impact of train travel - to the ambition and ingenuity, and also to destruction and sacrifice within its history - and is published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of first passenger railway line.

Andrew Martin studies this famous opening in a simplistic way, introducing the crucial initial moves and ideas and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them, something that has sometimes been neglected or taken for granted.

Shows how ecological models of change can be applied to education. Higher education needs to change, and it is already changing as a consequence of technology and the implementation of tools from artificial intelligence. There are natural processes of change that have been happening since the beginning of life on Earth, including ecological and evolutionary change. This book explores the value of adapting these processes to education, to show convincingly that educators have much to learn from paying attention to the emergent processes of ecology. Through examples that span a scale from individuals to communities, it provides examples and perspectives that can help change our thinking and enact practices that can enable all students to achieve greatness. Rather than directing education toward specific objectives, ecology shows that we can support students on unique educational journeys through an emphasis on student-centeredness, collaborative interactions, and building communities of people and ideas in the minds of students.

THE TOP TEN SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'Vividly conjures a lost age' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Hugely entertaining' EVENING STANDARD 'A feast of anecdotage' SUNDAY TIMES Throughout the twentieth century, the seaside service posters of Britain's railways promised fresh air and frivolity to millions of urban dwellers with the phrase: 'To the sea by train'. A staple of modern British life, the seaside getaway was intertwined with the train, in whose compartments holidaymakers were shunted from smog-choked cities to sandy coves. With his signature wit and anecdotal style, Andrew Martin captures an era defined by its railways: from the development of Brighton and Scarborough into pleasure resorts, and the introduction of bank holidays and two-day weekends, to the advent of cheap flights and the British coast's subsequent decline. Moquette is the carpet-like fabric covering the seats on London’s Tubes, buses, trams and Overground trains – and here is a brilliantly colourful guide to all its patterns. Since this colourful and idiosyncratic little book was first published in 2019 it has gone on to sell over s 13,000 copies over 7 printings, while the London Transport Museum’s moquette merchandise – everything from socks to sofas – has become a must-have style accessory. In the meantime, TfL has continued to design beautiful new patterns for its new rolling stock – and even to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Victoria Coach Station. Their appeal is not just London-wide but worldwide: no other city is adorned in such a vibrant way. This new, revised and expanded edition has 16 more pages, new moquettes and features, as well as all the historic designs from the London Transport Museum’s archive.

A terribly funny and lovably louche novel about five friends growing older, if not always up, from Andrew Martin, author of Early Work and Cool for America. Without Cassandra, Aaron would probably be dead. Fortunately, she won't leave him--despite the drinking, flirting, solipsism, armchair socialism, overspending, infidelity, catastrophic depression, and disparate but increasingly frequent spells of drug- and booze-addled debauchery. Unfortunately, she might be reaching the end of her rope. Cass and Aaron, like the other neurotic, ambivalent intellectuals in their orbit, are getting older. There's Malcolm, with his own alcoholism and marginally more successful writing career; his partner, Violet, a nurse with little patience for both; Antonia, a teaching fellow whose book about ecocide may get her tenure at a prestigious university near Harvard Square--yes, that one. When Sam, a charming trust-fund punk at the center of this loose network, dies suddenly, and a global pandemic takes hold, all five must contend with the lives they've made: their desires and disappointments, habits and hang-ups, pathologies and addictions, and the possibilities of making art and being good as the earth whirls to its end. Down Time marks the delightful return of Andrew Martin, the author of the pitch-perfect slacker classics Early Work and Cool for America. Compulsively readable and contagiously intelligent, this is a wryly comic social novel of settling down, selling out, growing up, and getting out that turns a terribly funny and hyper-literate eye on our most desperately guarded ambitions: to love and be loved, to know and be known, to stay sane, if only just.

A young Northern woman called May is working in the fabrics department of a grand London department store when a detective comes in, clutching a scrap of fabric. Any idea what this is . . ? May’s superiors aren’t interested, so she takes the piece of oddly carpet-like cloth – patterned in pretty yellows, purples and blues – and gets rid of the officer by offering to find out. It turns out to be a piece of railway moquette – but from which line, since no-one appears to have seen this striking pattern before - and how does it solve a murder? May’s investigations take her out into Metroland, up to the textile mills of Halifax, and finally to the Isle of Wight. Can this plucky young woman solve the Moquette Mystery? Seats of London – a left-field guide to the colourful array of patterns adorning London’s Tube train, bus and train seats since the Thirties – has become an unlikely bestseller, and is already in its sixth printing. The Moquette Mystery is a kind of sequel , as well as a quirky and unique crime novel in its own right.

'Andrew Martin is a railway wizard' Telegraph 'Leaves you with renewed confidence that trains can still be the most civilised way to travel' Financial Times Throughout the twentieth century, the seaside service posters of Britain's railways promised fresh air and frivolity to millions of urban dwellers with the phrase: 'To the sea by train'. Cyber space is easily the most complex thing humans have ever created. With billions of people and devices all connected together, vulnerability and compromise are inevitable. The complexity continues to grow, and with it comes the emergent insecurity brought by an ever-developing frontier where digital devices and connected people meet. Security challenges present themselves increasingly often and with ever-greater impacts. This is not going to change anytime soon. Although the internet has transformed communication, business, and social life for the better, the construct of 'cyber space' is incredibly fragile and presents endless risk. Connecting every corner of our lives to those of billions across the world, the frontier is slender between the good and the bad, benefit and catastrophe, real and fake, security and insecurity. Cyber security advice can be confusing, contradictory, and sometimes utterly detached from reality. Too easily, people feel guilty for not knowing what to do, or failing to live up to expectations. People, particularly business leaders and policy makers, must daily make security-sensitive decisions, sometimes unknowingly, without being security experts. Securing the Digital Frontier doesn't offer easy answers, but instead explains sixteen dimensions of this dynamic problem and its current partial solutions. The strong technology of encryption has become commonplace, and is a huge benefit if deployed well: but how can you tell? Programming errors give rise to security problems, but why can we not eliminate them? Privacy is tied up with security, but can the two work against each other? Cyber space is international: how can domestic laws protect us? And what happens when those laws come into conflict with technologies like encryption? Why do you need a punctuation symbol and a capital letter in your password, anyway? Through a grasp of the big picture, through technical and human perspectives, we can begin to explore ways to unwind some of the complexity and find ways to contain the risk.

"I remember being too young to be afraid and too immature to realise the gravity of the situation." Learn what was it like to be in the RUC during the Northern Ireland Troubles. Delve into the harrowing experiences of police officers stationed at Springfield Road Station, which was situated in the heartland of Republican terrorists in Belfast. This compelling narrative exposes the daily dangers faced by those who served there, where the threat of violence was so pervasive that a sign was erected inside the main entrance gates to remind officers not to stand behind them, as terrorists often fired 'blindly' at the gate area. What was it like to be under threat 24/7? How did officers cope with coded callsigns, ambushes, sniper fire, mortar bombs, and murder? This book reveals the gritty reality of their existence, including the time when one officer was inadvertently stranded on the Falls Road, and the heroic story of a soldier who gave his life to save a local family from death. Through private accounts and personal stories, this book offers a raw and unfiltered look at the lives of the brave men and women who worked out of this besieged base. From the constant threat of death to the psychological toll of serving in such a volatile environment, this book provides a poignant and powerful testament to their resilience and courage. Discover the untold stories where every day was a battle for survival and every officer was a hero in Without Fear or Favour.

'An utterly enjoyable voyage under Paris' - THE OLDIE'Delightful and diverting... Martin is the most unpretentious and companionable of guides; the book is great fun' - LITERARY REVIEW'An eclectic blend of engineering and travelogue, urban planning and anecdote... a sincere love letter' - THE ECONOMISTAndrew Martin has been described as 'the laureate of railways', having written many books with railway themes. Metropolitain: An Ode to the Paris Metro, is the first English history of the Metro for the general reader. Metropolitain is as stylish as the Metro itself and laced with cultural references. Andrew explains why Last Tango in Paris is a great Metro film, and what the Metro chase scene in the classic thriller, Le Samourai, says about Parisian culture. We also meet Andrew's half-English, half-French friend, Julian, who runs a society dedicated to Metro history. He tells Andrew, 'A Metro station is like the wine cellar of chateau, which is a very nice thing to be reminded of.'The book takes the reader on a constant tour of Paris, both underground and over. But Paris, and the Metro, is changing, undergoing a huge expansion. This, and the imminence of the Paris Olympics, make this a timely title.
