Fragments of the Brooklyn Talmud

Fragments of the Brooklyn Talmud

Eighty years from now, in a time of increasing environmental degradation and after one-sixth of the Earth's population has died in a vast pandemic, a noted woman rabbi in Brooklyn hosts a convocation for Jewish clergy and scholars from every background to create a new Talmud for living in such dangerous times. Over the course of five years, the attendees work to compile a text in multiple genres--but their text is never completed. Eighty years later, a single laptop is discovered that contains fragments of their text--and that is what this book contains. There are poems, stories, legal texts, and conversations, on belief, practice, liturgy, all designed for beleaguered people living in what seems to them the end of time. There are texts of hope, humor, despair, rage, and simple witnessing of the dying world around them (which may or may not be our world). ""Andrew Ramer has taken us deep into our collective Jewish past, but with Fragments, he takes us into our future. He whimsically envisions a future world in which ancient Jewish texts continue to inform our choices, our laments, an d our responsibilities. At times wistful, at times comical, Ramer takes us on a journey of what could be if we continue down our present global path. He calls us to task; he calls God to task as well."" --Rabbi Mychal Copeland, Congregation Sha'ar Zahav, San Francisco, co-editor of Struggling in Good Faith, LGBTQI Inclusion from 13 American Religious Perspectives ""A courageous, brilliant, visionary work In Fragments of the Brooklyn Talmud, Andrew Ramer dares to imagine the future after climatological, environmental, and nuclear catastrophes render human life nearly unrecognizable. It is a heartbreaking vision that manages to offer hope in its portrait of Jewish resilience."" --Rabbi Jacob Staub, Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Spirituality at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College ""In this creative, imaginative, original, and provocative work, Andrew Ramer once again challenges us to rethink our assumptions about Jewish life. Set in a futuristic moment seemingly unrelated to debates in contemporary Jewish life, Fragments of the Brooklyn Talmud predicts the past as much as the future. It investigates traditional rabbinic authority by offering Ramer's view of a new progressive halachah. Read forward in time, we learn how a future generation crafts its own Talmud. Read backward in time, we get to re-imagine the potential of a Babylonian or Palestinian Talmud interpreted with a more expansive, inclusive, and pluralist frame. Packed with scores of rhetorical nuggets that deepen meaning, Ramer gifts us a hopeful vision of the world's future even as he describes an era marked by the most challenging day-to-day circumstance."" --Marc Dollinger, Professor of Jewish Studies, San Francisco State University Andrew Ramer is the author of Queering the Text: Biblical, Medieval, and Modern Jewish Stories; Torah Told Different: Stories for a Pan/Poly/Post-Denominational Era; and Deathless: The Complete, Uncensored, Heartbreaking, and Amazing Autobiography of Serach bat Asher, the Oldest Woman in the World. The world's first ordained interfaith maggid (sacred storyteller), he lives in Oakland, California.

Within the pages of this book, you'll meet an urban demon, a witch in the suburbs, a Jewish vampire, a magic dog, and a golem named Judith. You'll find out what happened to Marx, Freud, and Einstein after they died, read lost Jewish texts, learn about the messiah and her unfolding mission, and spend time with a goofy angel and a kvetchy one--the two of them (perhaps) a couple, but neither of them the transmitters of these tales.

Two Hearts Dancing: A Spiritual Journeybook for Gay Men isn't a guidebook on ""coming out"" but a guidebook on coming in--coming in to who we are as mystics, lovers, and healers. Nor is it a sequel to the gay underground classic Two Flutes Playing but a companion volume to it. The first section of this book, ""Stories of our People,"" contains fourteen tales that are grounded in gay archetypes and ends with a responsive reading to be used in gay men's rituals. The second part, ""Poems for Our Tribe,"" contains twenty-four poems that are mythic, mystical explorations of embodied spirituality, sexuality, and love. These poems are followed by another ritual, which has been used in gay men's gatherings around the world, and the book ends with a story about dying that bookends the opening story in the book, on being born.

When Two Flutes Playing was first published it was revolutionary: it offered gay men a spiritual mythology that gave deep meaning to their desire. For those of us who grew up with the shaming culture of Judeo-Christian teachings on same-sex love this book was profoundly healing. Now, more than twenty-five years later it is still revolutionary. In a time where gay marriage encourages assimilation, Two Flutes Playing celebrates what makes us different and honors the unique gifts gay men bring to humanity--gifts that are essential to the planet's healing. It helps us recognize and recover the ancient wisdom of our hidden tradition.

Andrew Ramer's new book, Queering the Text: Biblical, Medieval, and Modern Jewish Stories, plays and grapples with traditional midrashim, drawing inspiration from the homoerotic love poems of medieval Spain, and envisioning alternate versions of the present. Inspired by the pioneering work of Jewish feminists, Ramer has crafted stories that anchor LGBT lives in the three-thousand-year-old history of the Jewish people

Alcohol, tobacco, sugar, pot, and hard drugs are power tools the addict uses unsuccessfully to reach for a life task or vision. This channeled book shows how to reach those same places in consciousness harmlessly and to heal the emotional and spiritual aftereffects of addiction through meditation, flower essences, and crystals. She's more than 3,000 years old. Her grandfather was the patriarch Jacob. She's mentioned by name three times in the Hebrew Bible, but there are no stories told about her. She knew Moses and David, Spinoza and Einstein--and now, at long last, Serach bat Asher has written her autobiography. ""I was born in a tent,"" Serach tells us, a woman long silenced by history. She is feisty, funny, and bitter. The stories she tells about what really happened to her and her family will make you laugh and cry and maybe even rage against her, the oldest woman in the world, now living two blocks from the beach in Los Angeles. ""'Fiction, ' says Andrew Ramer in this remarkable book, provides 'a marvelous mirror of the soul.' And, once again, Ramer has produced a profoundly soulful work packed with insight, pathos, and memorable interplay between ancient and contemporary wisdom."" --Steven J. Zipperstein, Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History, Stanford University ""In this imaginatively recounted story, Andrew Ramer offers a cinematic retelling of one biblical woman, Serach bat Asher. He extends our arc of history through this 'memoir'--a beautifully written first-person account of a very sage and prescient woman. Suspending our literal understanding of Torah, we hear Serach stretch and spin a tale of forgotten stories."" --Susan Berrin, Editor-in-Chief of Sh'ma Now: A Journal of Jewish Sensibilities ""Ramer takes us on a delightful romp through the Hebrew Bible, filling in the missing stories of women and LGBT biblical figures. Along the way, he has important things to say about the meaning of inherited tradition and the power of reinterpretation and reinvention."" --Judith Plaskow, Author of Standing Again at Sinai: Judaism from a Feminist Perspective ""Deathless is a radical reimagining of the Hebrew Bible as it has come down to us, 'another Torah, ' reintegrating the voice of our now almost invisible female lineage and the suppressed Israelite Goddess religion of the ancient world. Andrew Ramer's epic of the life of Serach bat Asher will pique your curiosity, smash your sacred cows, make you laugh in surprise, and pierce your heart."" --Risa Wallach, Cantor at Congregation B'nai Shalom in Walnut Creek, California Andrew Elias Ramer is the author of Torah Told Different: Stories for a Pan/Poly/Post Denominational World; Queering the Text: Biblical, Medieval, and Modern Jewish Stories, and a co-author of the international best seller Ask Your Angels.
