The Hidden Inequity uncovers a silent public health crisis within Scotland’s education system: the creation of unusually wide 19‑month school cohorts that leave the youngest children at a lifelong disadvantage. Drawing on extensive systematic review evidence, policy analysis, and consultation with international experts, the authors show how this cohort structure amplifies relative age effects, shaping children’s mental health, learning disability diagnoses, academic outcomes, physical wellbeing, and long‑term opportunities. Chapters explore the deeply inequitable impacts of these policies, with girls, children from deprived communities, and minority ethnic groups disproportionately harmed. Well‑intended funding changes have unintentionally widened these gaps, making Scotland’s current system both internationally unique and increasingly unsustainable. The authors argue that this moment presents a rare and urgent opportunity for reform, with legal and financial barriers already resolved and clear evidence pointing the way forward. Offering nine actionable, evidence‑based policy recommendations, the authors chart a practical path to align school entry with legal ages, tighten cohort structures, improve equity, and bring Scottish practice in line with global standards. A compelling call to action for policymakers, educators, public health leaders, and researchers, The Hidden Inequity reframes school entry policy as a decisive determinant of health and life opportunities.

This concise introduction provides an entry point to the world of inverse problems and data assimilation for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the mathematical sciences. It will also appeal to researchers in science and engineering who are interested in the systematic underpinnings of methodologies widely used in their disciplines. The authors examine inverse problems and data assimilation in turn, before exploring the use of data assimilation methods to solve generic inverse problems by introducing an artificial algorithmic time. Topics covered include maximum a posteriori estimation, (stochastic) gradient descent, variational Bayes, Monte Carlo, importance sampling and Markov chain Monte Carlo for inverse problems; and 3DVAR, 4DVAR, extended and ensemble Kalman filters, and particle filters for data assimilation. The book contains a wealth of examples and exercises, and can be used to accompany courses as well as for self-study.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Rich in titles on English life and social history, this collection spans the world as it was known to eighteenth-century historians and explorers. Titles include a wealth of travel accounts and diaries, histories of nations from throughout the world, and maps and charts of a world that was still being discovered. Students of the War of American Independence will find fascinating accounts from the British side of conflict. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. This book provides a systematic treatment of the mathematical underpinnings of work in data assimilation, covering both theoretical and computational approaches. Specifically the authors develop a unified mathematical framework in which a Bayesian formulation of the problem provides the bedrock for the derivation, development and analysis of algorithms; the many examples used in the text, together with the algorithms which are introduced and discussed, are all illustrated by the MATLAB software detailed in the book and made freely available online. The book is organized into nine chapters: the first contains a brief introduction to the mathematical tools around which the material is organized; the next four are concerned with discrete time dynamical systems and discrete time data; the last four are concerned with continuous time dynamical systems and continuous time data and are organized analogously to the corresponding discrete time chapters. This book isaimed at mathematical researchers interested in a systematic development of this interdisciplinary field, and at researchers from the geosciences, and a variety of other scientific fields, who use tools from data assimilation to combine data with time-dependent models. The numerous examples and illustrations make understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of data assimilation accessible. Furthermore, the examples, exercises and MATLAB software, make the book suitable for students in applied mathematics, either through a lecture course, or through self-study.

On 6 June 1944 British, American, Canadian and French troops landed in Normandy by air and sea. This was one of the key moments of the Second World War, a long-anticipated invasion which would, ultimately, lead to the defeat of Nazi Germany. By the day’s end a lodgement had been effected and Operation OVERLORD was being hailed as a success. In reality the assault had produced mixed results and at certain points along the French coastline the position was still far from certain. The key Allied objectives had also not been captured during the first day of the fighting and this failure would have long-term consequences. Of the priority targets, the city of Caen was a vital logistical hub with its road and rail networks plus it would also act as a critical axis for launching the anticipated follow-on attacks against the German defenders. As a result an entire brigade of British troops was tasked with attempting its capture but their advance culminated a few miles short. This new book examines this significant element of the wider D-Day operation and provides a narrative account of the operations conducted by 3 British Infantry Division. It examines in some detail the planning, preparation and the landings that were made on the beaches of Sword sector. To do this it considers the previously published material and also draws upon archival sources many of which have been previously overlooked to identify key factors behind the failure to capture the city. Its publication coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Allied liberation of France.

Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scienti?c disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modern as well as the classical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high level of excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and s- bolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos, mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook - ries is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and to encourage the teaching of new couses. "Of Cargoes, Colonies and Kings" gives an offbeat account of Andrew Stuart's wide-ranging experiences. Never a stereotypical colonialist, as the son of a missionary, he knew the people, the politicians and the kings of Uganda from his childhood and worked with them until 1965, four years after independence, when he joined the British Diplomatic Service. As a diplomat, before ending up as British Ambassador to Finland, he was soon drawn back into the closing stages of the British Empire. The end of empire in British and French territories from Africa to the Pacific, the rise of China to near superpower status and the opening of political fissures on the Indian subcontinent - all are themes of global and enduring importance. Andrew Stuart's eventful career as a colonial administrator and diplomat took place against this international backdrop.

This book unites the study of dynamical systems and numerical solution of differential equations. The first three chapters contain the elements of the theory of dynamical systems and the numerical solution of initial-value problems. In the remaining chapters, numerical methods are formulated as dynamical systems and the convergence and stability properties of the methods are examined. Topics studied include the stability of numerical methods for contractive, dissipative, gradient and Hamiltonian systems together with the convergence properties of equilibria, periodic solutions and strange attractors under numerical approximation. This book will be an invaluable tool for graduate students and researchers in the fields of numerical analysis and dynamical systems.

This intriguing book contains over 200 old pictures and a wealth of superbly presented facts, anecdotes and opinions on the way North Glasgow was. North Woodside, Maryhill, Lambhill, Ruchill, Possilpark, and Springburn are all examined in great detail using a series of images which illustrates the changes over the past 100 years and the sense of community that is prevalent in this area of Glasgow. The photographs, which come from a variety of local sources, are enhanced by carefully researched captions which draw on author's vast local knowledge. This book contains nostalgic pictures of tramcars, tenement buildings, streets, schools, shops and public houses that have now gone, including images from W. D. MacMillan's tramcar photographs of the fifties. Particular focus is given to the Springburn locomotive industry and every aspect of the community is focused on from Possil House to Maryhill Football Club. The result is a volume that will rekindle the past for many and serve as a nostalgic record for all those who love and know this town well.
