Diesels at Doncaster

Diesels at Doncaster

For many people, Doncaster will always be a railway town. Its association with locomotive building and with the prestige express trains of the East Coast Main Line goes back over 150 years, its name synonymous with the Flying Scotsman, the Elizabethan, and the Talisman – proud flag-bearers for the Great Northern Railway and later the LNER. Its attraction for railway enthusiasts and photographers hardly requires explanation; suffice it to say that even in the post-steam era, it was the place to be for anyone keen to see a daily cavalcade of varied diesel power with the bonus of non-stop trains travelling at speed to and from the capital. From shunters and DMUs to the mighty Deltics, and from unfortunate candidates for scrapping to immaculate ‘ex-works’ examples fresh from the nearby ‘Plant ’, there always seemed to be something happening at Doncaster. In this pictorial collection, photographers Andrew and John Walker have compiled a selection of nearly two hundred images from the 1970s and 80s to the present day, illustrating this diversity. The book focuses on diesel traction in the pre-electrification era, though later images represent the Doncaster of the twenty-first century, sadly now without its famous locomotive works but still a strategic and important junction on the national network.
East Midlands Traction

East Midlands Traction

The East Midlands is rich in railway history and heritage. The Midland and Great Northern Railway companies laid much of the foundations, building extensively across the region to link its important centres of population and to tap into the significant coal reserves of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Although much depleted in the wake of branch line and colliery closures, the area still boasts two intensively used main lines, the important North East–South West route, threading its way through the Midland Railway’s capital at Derby, and many other secondary passenger and freight-only lines, all offering great possibilities for railway photography. This pictorial collection presents a wide-ranging selection of images of East Midlands traction from the late 1970s to the present day, photographed and compiled by Andrew Walker. Focusing on the counties of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, the book features over a dozen different diesel locomotive types on both passenger and freight operations, together with multiple units, HSTs and the later generation of Sprinters. Many of the images feature locomotives and railway infrastructure now confined to history and in almost 200 pictures the diversity of rail traffic in this important English region is amply illustrated.

Class 37 Locomotives

Well-proportioned, versatile, aesthetic, durable – the English Electric Class 37, the great survivor of the modernisation-plan diesel fleet, deserves all of these accolades and more. Never as celebrated as the Deltics, never as idolised as the Westerns, always intended to be a workhorse; this is the locomotive that has, in many ways, surpassed its more illustrious peers as an example of all that is best in motive power design and engineering. This pictorial collection contains nearly 200 photographs of one of the best loved of diesel types, compiled by Andrew Walker with contributions from other photographers who, like him, have always been drawn to these great British locomotives. The Class 37s always roamed far and wide over the national network, and this book covers locations ranging from the Scottish Highlands to South Wales, showing the 37s on freight and passenger duties, at depots and in works. Showcasing images from the 1970s through to the present day, the book provides detailed captions with in-depth technical specifications and information on the individual locos, their history and operation in traffic, and features many of the class variants and their liveries over the decades.

Boko Haram's appetite for exemplary violence and kidnapping women and girls has thrust it to the top of the global news agenda. In a few furious years its cadres have all but severed parts of northern Nigeria -- Africa's most populous state and largest economy -- from the hands of the government in Abuja. Videos broadcast by Boko Haram feature its leader, a grimacing rantingdemagogue who taunts viewers, claiming he will 'eat the heart of the infidel' and calling on Nigerians to reject their corrupt democracy and return to a 'pure' form of Islam. Thousands have been slaughtered in their campaign of purification which has evolved through a bloody civil war. In Northern Nigeria - which has witnessed many caliphates in the past - radical ideas flourish and strange sects are common. Boko Haram has drawn on and exploited these traditions to mobilise people against the corruption of Nigeria's politicians and oligarchs who have preyed on a state buoyed by oil revenues and turned public institutions into spoons for the pot. When the going was good it didn't matter. Now a new ravenous force threatens them all. Andrew Walker guides the reader through Boko Haram's hinterland - examining northern Nigeria's history, culture and politics - in search of where the group comes from and where Nigeria might be going.

Thailand's Political Peasants

Thailand's Political Peasants

When a populist movement elected Thaksin Shinawatra as prime minister of Thailand in 2001, many of the country's urban elite dismissed the outcome as just another symptom of rural corruption, a traditional patronage system dominated by local strongmen pressuring their neighbors through political bullying and vote-buying. In Thailand's Political Peasants, however, Andrew Walker argues that the emergence of an entirely new socioeconomic dynamic has dramatically changed the relations of Thai peasants with the state, making them a political force to be reckoned with. Whereas their ancestors focused on subsistence, this generation of middle-income peasants seeks productive relationships with sources of state power, produces cash crops, and derives additional income through non-agricultural work. In the increasingly decentralized, disaggregated country, rural villagers and farmers have themselves become entrepreneurs and agents of the state at the local level, while the state has changed from an extractor of taxes to a supplier of subsidies and a patron of development projects. Thailand's Political Peasants provides an original, provocative analysis that encourages an ethnographic rethinking of rural politics in rapidly developing countries. Drawing on six years of fieldwork in Ban Tiam, a rural village in northern Thailand, Walker shows how analyses of peasant politics that focus primarily on rebellion, resistance, and evasion are becoming less useful for understanding emergent forms of political society.

Forest Guardians, Forest Destroyers

Forest Guardians, Forest Destroyers

Tim Forsyth; Andrew Walker; K. Sivaramakrishnan

In this far-reaching examination of environmental problems and politics in northern Thailand, Tim Forsyth and Andrew Walker analyze deforestation, water supply, soil erosion, use of agrochemicals, and biodiversity in order to challenge popularly held notions of environmental crisis. They argue that such crises have been used to support political objectives of state expansion and control in the uplands. They have also been used to justify the alternative directions advocated by an array of NGOs. In official and alternative discourses of economic development, the peoples living in Thailand's hill country are typically cast as either guardians or destroyers of forest resources, often depending on their ethnicity. Political and historical factors have created a simplistic, misleading, and often scientifically inaccurate environmental narrative: Hmong farmers, for example, are thought to exhibit environmentally destructive practices, whereas the Karen are seen as linked to and protective of their ancestral home. Forsyth and Walker reveal a much more complex relationship of hill farmers to the land, to other ethnic groups, and to the state. They conclude that current explanations fail to address the real causes of environmental problems and unnecessarily restrict the livelihoods of local people. The authors' critical assessment of simplistic environmental narratives, as well as their suggestions for finding solutions, will be valuable in international policy discussions about environmental issues in rapidly developing countries. Moreover, their redefinition of northern Thailand's environmental problems, and their analysis of how political influences have reinforced inappropriate policies, demonstrate new ways of analyzing how environmental science and knowledge are important arenas for political control. This book makes valuable contributions to Thai studies and more generally to the fields of environmental science, ecology, geography, anthropology, and political science, as well as to policy making and resource management in the developing world.
