This book combines legal and philosophical perspectives to address the question of whether states are bound by human rights when they act with effects on people abroad—states’ extraterritorial human rights obligations. Taking an innovative approach, it begins with a profound legal analysis of the issue at national, supranational, and international levels and then engages in depth with counterarguments against extraterritorially applying human rights, on the basis of which it develops its own ethical justificatory theory of extraterritorial human rights obligations. The book closes the circle by showing what the practical implications of this theory for the interpretation (and possible evolvement) of human rights law would be. In a world where critiques of, and resistance to, the general idea of universal human rights are on rise, the book contributes to closing the gap between judicial and normative perspectives on extraterritorial human rights obligations by inquiring into the ethical underpinnings of this topical legal challenge. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students in human rights, international law, and more broadly in political philosophy, philosophy of law, and international relations. Generationen von Fotografinnen und Fotografen aus der Schweiz und Deutschland machten sich zwischen 1920 und 1980 auf den Weg Richtung Indien: Ihre Bilder vom marchenhaften Wunderland, von Gandhi, von Hunger und Hippies existieren in ihrer ungebrochenen Widerspruchlichkeit bis heute fort. Der Zurcher Verleger und Fotograf Martin Hurlimann inszenierte Ende der 1920er Jahre Indien im Fotobuch und in Kulturzeitschriften als zeitlose Augenweide. Mit einem gewissen Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi geriet zugleich eine ganze Politelite als Akteurin im antikolonialen Widerstand durch zahlreiche Fotografien ins Bewusstsein. Bilder des Hungers wurden ikonisch und pragten insbesondere nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die Wahrnehmung. Seit den 1960er Jahren bevolkerten Hippies in bunten Gewandern die Seiten der Illustrierten: 'Der Trip' war das Ziel und Goa der spirituelle Sehnsuchtsort. Aus diesem Bilderschatz schopft das Buch eine Kulturgeschichte westlicher Vorstellungen von Entwicklung, Kultur und Modernitat im 20. Jahrhundert und legt dar wie diese im deutschsprachigen Raum in Bildern Indiens verhandelt wurden.

This study explores the poetics and politics of self in J. M. Coetzee’s «autre»-biographical works «Scenes from Provincial Life». The author provides a detailed analysis of Coetzee’s conception of self in his fictionalized memoirs, as well as of philosophical, aesthetic and political implications of «autre»-biography. She reads these works as literary figurations of an estranged self, maintaining that they engage with deeply historical but also universal questions of the relation between self and power. Coetzee’s fictionalized memoirs, she argues, are thus not merely dramatizations of the inherent elusiveness of the self but a critique of systems and discourses of normativization and oppression.
