Literacy and Growth

Literacy and Growth

Literacy and Growth is a unique genealogical study of English teaching in the UK and abroad since the 18th century. Focusing specifically on the concepts of literacy and growth, this book explores key moments in the development of ideas about English teaching. Hodgson and Harris reveal the Enlightenment forebears of such contemporary concepts as “cultural capital” and “critical literacy”; the significance of “growth” to the writers and social critics who opposed Victorian Utilitarianism; and the 20th-century influences that established English as a humane study, including the Newbolt Report, the Cambridge Scrutiny group, and the London School of Percival Gurrey and James Britton. The authors examine unpublished Dartmouth Conference papers to reconsider John Dixon’s construction of “growth” in his seminal report Growth through English (1967). They reflect on the turbulent aftermath of Dartmouth, the changes in the “growth” model following the cultural turn in English studies, and the politics behind the shift from “English” to “literacy” in the 1990s. Importantly, they redefine the growth model for the 21st century to support teachers and students in the current context of performativity, high-stakes assessment, the “knowledge curriculum”, and artificial intelligence. Essential reading for tutors and students of English and literacy as well as policymakers in the subject area, this book will engage all those interested in the history and philosophy of English in education. It will be a key resource for those involved in the education and training of English teachers, as well as those undertaking research in English education.

In a garden, seeds are planted, but with water, fertilizer, tilling of the ground, and a "farmer who removes predators and unwanted weeds consistently" this allows the seeds to take root and grow, and produce a wealthy/healthy harvest. Unwanted insects and animals seems to be attracted to a bountiful garden. Snakes love to hide in gardens especially if they are not maintained. It becomes a snake breeding ground. This then becomes a war in the garden. The garden is representing your mind. We as Christians, battle in our mind in different ways. The mind is something that can be used for good or evil that Satan would to control. Satan wants fill our minds with lies, decit, anger, depression, unforgiveness, bitterness, fear, money, murder along with many more deception spirits we know as strongholds. Our mind is just like a garden. We let Satan be its gardener by planting and watering it. We think on the seeds that the enemy had planted, is planting, and want to plant in our mind. Those seeds have took, are taking, and will take root and grow and bring forth fruit in our mouth and hearts and produce a garden of deception in our minds. This book will allow you to defeat the war that happens within in your mind. You can win this war

Education in Popular Culture explores what makes schools, colleges, teachers and students an enduring focus for a wide range of contemporary media. What is it about the school experience that makes us wish to relive it again and again? The book provides an overview of education as it is represented in popular culture, together with a framework through which educators can interpret these representations in relation to their own professional values and development. The analyses are contextualised within contemporary, historical and ideological frameworks, and make connections between popular representations and professional and political discourses about education. Through its examination of film, television, popular lyrics and fiction, this book tackles educational themes that recur in popular culture, and demonstrates how they intersect with debates concerning teacher performance, the curriculum and young people’s behaviour and morality. Chapters explore how experiences of education are both reflected and constructed in ways that sometimes reinforce official and professional educational perspectives, and sometimes resist and oppose them. Education in Popular Culture will stimulate critical reflection on the popular myths and professional discourses that surround teachers and teaching. It will serve to deepen analyses of teaching and learning and their associated institutional and societal contexts in a creative and challenging way.
