Health Equity, Social Justice and Human Rights

Health Equity, Social Justice and Human Rights

Important links between health and human rights are increasingly recognised, and human rights can be viewed as one of the social determinants of health. A human rights framework provides an excellent foundation for advocacy on health inequalities, a value-based alternative to views of health as a commodity, and an opportunity to move away from public health action being based on charity. This text demystifies systems set up for the protection and promotion of human rights globally, regionally, and nationally. It explores the use and usefulness of rights-based approaches as an important part of the toolbox available to health and welfare professionals and community members working in a variety of settings to improve health and reduce health inequities. Global in its scope, Health Equity, Social Justice, and Human Rights presents examples from all over the world to illustrate the successful use of human rights approaches in fields such as HIV/AIDS, improving access to essential drugs, reproductive health, women’s health, and improving the health of marginalised and disadvantaged groups. Understanding human rights and their interrelationships with health and health equity is essential for public health and health promotion practitioners, as well as being important for a wide range of other health and social welfare professionals. This text is valuable reading for students, practitioners, and researchers concerned with combating health inequalities and promoting social justice.

Domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault, and sexual exploitation through prostitution, pornography and trafficking can have many significant adverse impacts on a survivor’s health and wellbeing, in the short, medium and long-term. Taking a life-course approach, the book explores what is known about appropriate treatment responses to those who have experienced, and those who perpetrate, domestic and sexual violence and abuse. The book also examines key factors that are important in understanding how and why different groups experience heightened risks of domestic and sexual violence and abuse, namely: gender and sexuality; race and culture; disability; and abuse by professionals. Drawing together results from specially commissioned research, the views of experts by experience, experts by profession and the published research literature, the book argues that sufficient is already known to delineate an appropriate public health framework, encompassing primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, to successfully tackle the important public health issue represented by domestic and sexual violence and abuse. Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse equips health and social care professionals and services to identify and respond to the needs of affected individuals with a view to the prevention and early intervention.

Partnership and Participation

Partnership and Participation

The past two decades have seen an increase in the number of organisations working together in multiagency settings and increased calls for partnership and participation in organisational and public life. Models for this kind of working arrangement range from contracting out and joint planning, through to more formal arrangements such as setting up a joint agency. How to make these arrangements effective in developing policy and aiding decision-making can, however, be problematic. To make the multiagency setting work, organisations must manage diversity, resolve conflict and promote collaboration. The processes for effective decision-making in multiagency settings form the central concern of this book. Group processes must become more participatory, democratic and empowering. Illustrated with case studies drawn from the US, Africa, Asia, Latin America, as well as the UK and Europe, the book surveys the range of multiagency settings, explores the mechanisms and processes for multiagency work, and reviews a range of processes and tools that have shown themselves to be effective. Partnership & Participation offers no guaranteed answers, but provides a useful framework and stimulating guidelines for those facing the many questions that are raised by working in a multiagency setting.
