Serving Aristocracy is the history of social negotiation and mobility in an early modern knowledge community, centred on the aristocratic De la Gardie family and their sphere of manors and estates in seventeenth-century Sweden. Focusing on underprivileged women and men and the knowledge community that shaped their interactions, social negotiations, and mobility, this book documents ordinary people’s lives and work in an aristocratic sphere. It uses the De la Gardie bureaucracy’s meticulous records to full effect, charting servants’ experiences, learning, and agency. The unique collection of petitions provides an invaluable insight into how servants viewed their own backgrounds, personal predicaments, and hopes for the future, and how they negotiated their work and wage. It reveals the aristocratic estate organization not only as a workplace, but also as a training ground where knowledge circulation was as fundamental as socialization, social negotiation, and networking. Metodkunskaper är nödvändiga för att både skriva, läsa och förstå vetenskaplig text. För att kunna få fram och ta del av information i historiska källor krävs både kvalitativa och kvantitativa metoder av olika slag. Den här grundboken har därför ett brett anslag och presenterar ett flertal praktiska tillvägagångssätt inom historiska studier. Boken har tre delar. I den första behandlas de inledande faserna av en historisk studie, med kapitel om undersökningsdesign och källkritik. Den andra delen har en kvalitativ inriktning och samlar kapitel om textanalys, begreppshistoria, diskursanalys, bild som källa och muntlig historia. I den tredje delen är fokus kvantitativt och här tar författarna upp beskrivande statistik, korrelations- och regressions­analys, kollektivbiografi och korrespondensanalys samt rumslig metod. Metod - guide för historiska studier är avsedd för studenter i humanistiska och samhällsvetenskapliga ämnen med historisk inriktning vid universitet och högskolor. I denna utökade upplaga har samtliga kapitel uppdaterats.

Ska historia förstås och läras som en framåtriktad rörelse, med början, mitt och slut, eller ska historia förstås bakifrån, med utgångspunkt i våra egna, sentida frågeställningar?
