This is the most cherished novel from each of England's talented sisters, in one gorgeously packaged volume. The Bronte family was a literary phenomenon unequalled before or since. Both Charlotte's "Jane Eyre" and Emily's "Wuthering Heights" have won lofty places in the pantheon and stirred the romantic sensibilities of generations of readers. This "Leatherbound Classics" edition unites these two enduring favourites with the lesser known, but no less powerful work by their youngest sister, Anne Bronte. Drawn from Anne's own experiences as a governess, Agnes Grey offers a compelling view of Victorian chauvinism and materialism. Its inclusion makes "The Bronte Sisters" a must-have volume for anyone fascinated by this singularly talented family.

Agnes Grey is the debut novel of English author Anne Bront (writing under the pen name of Acton Bell), first published in December 1847, and republished in a second edition in 1850. 1] The novel follows Agnes Grey, a governess, as she works within families of the English gentry. Scholarship and comments by Anne's sister Charlotte Bront suggest the novel is largely based on Anne Bront 's own experiences as a governess for five years. Like her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman. The choice of central character allows Anne to deal with issues of oppression and abuse of women and governesses, isolation and ideas of empathy. An additional theme is the fair treatment of animals. Agnes Grey also mimics some of the stylistic approaches of bildungsromans, employing ideas of personal growth and coming to age, but representing a character who in fact does not gain in virtue. The Irish novelist George Moore praised Agnes Grey as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters, and went so far as to compare Anne's prose to that of Jane Austen. Modern critics have made more subdued claims admiring Agnes Grey with a less overt praise of Bront 's work than Moore.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel by the English author Anne Bront . It was first published in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell. Probably the most shocking of the Bront s' novels, it had an instant and phenomenal success, but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. The novel is framed as a series of letters from Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about the events leading to his meeting his wife. A mysterious young widow arrives at Wildfell Hall, an Elizabethan mansion which has been empty for many years, with her young son and servant. She lives there in strict seclusion under the assumed name Helen Graham and very soon finds herself the victim of local slander. Refusing to believe anything scandalous about her, Gilbert Markham, a young farmer, discovers her dark secrets. In her diary, Helen writes about her husband's physical and moral decline through alcohol, and the world of debauchery and cruelty from which she has fled. This novel of marital betrayal is set within a moral framework tempered by Anne's optimistic belief in universal salvation. 1] The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is mainly considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels. 2] May Sinclair, in 1913, said that the slamming of Helen's bedroom door against her husband reverberated throughout Victorian England. In escaping her husband, Helen violates not only social conventions, but also English law.

Osnovyvajas na sobstvennom opyte, ona sozdala "Agnes Grej" - istoriju ispolnenija zhelanij molodoj guvernantki. Tonkij jumor, masterstvo izobrazhenija povsednevnoj zhizni i peredacha samykh delikatnykh chuvstv vo mnogom napominajut proizvedenija Dzhejn Ostin. Sledujuschaja kniga Enn Bronte, "Neznakomka iz Uajldfell-Kholla", imela fenomenalnyj uspekh. V mrachnom Uajldfell-Kholle, davno pokinutom starinnom dome, neozhidanno pojavljaetsja molodaja zhenschina v chernom - odinokaja, nezavisimaja i prekrasnaja. Sosedi umirajut ot ljubopytstva, no krasavitsa-neznakomka ne speshit otkryt tajnu svoego proshlogo... Eto semejno-psikhologicheskij roman, ochen smelyj dlja svoego vremeni i aktualnyj do sikh por. V nastojaschee izdanie takzhe voshli perevody stikhotvorenij Enn Bronte, v kotorykh poeticheskie kartiny prirody soedinjajutsja s razmyshlenijami o vere i dukhovnom puti. Neznakomka iz Uajldfell-Kholla
Enn, mladshaja iz trekh sester Bronte, umerla v 29 let, uspev napisat lish dva romana. "Neznakomka iz Uajldfell-Kholla" - samyj smelyj roman svoego vremeni. V nem s neverojatnoj derzostju postavlen vopros o polozhenii zhenschiny v seme. Nuzhno li radi rebenka terpet zhizn s domashnim tiranom? Mozhno li najti sily ujti ot muzhchiny, kotoryj degradiruet ot alkogolizma? I vozmozhno li, nakonets, ispytat vystradannoe schaste? "Agnes Grej" napisana v populjarnom zhanre serediny XIX veka - roman o guvernantke. Istorija, v kotoroj sbyvajutsja mechty, terpenie i dobrodetel voznagrazhdajutsja, vo mnogom avtobiografichna. V otlichie ot svoikh znamenitykh sester, Sharlotty i Emili, Enn Bronte pishet zdravo, realistichno, pokazyvaja storony dejstvitelnosti, o kotorykh v Anglii ee vremeni obychno molchali, - o pjanstve i o tom, na chto sposoben pjanyj chelovek; o razvode i ukhode zheny ot muzha-tirana. Ona stavila pered soboj odnu tsel - "prosto rasskazat pravdu, ved pravda vsegda prepodnosit urok". V ee knigakh ne najti romanticheskogo izobrazhenija geroev, tolko beskompromissnoe opisanie zhizni, dazhe esli ona neprigljadna. Zhizni, iz kotoroj mozhno uvidet vykhod. Novaja serija klassiki dlja poklonnikov "Magistral. Glavnyj trend" v tverdoj oblozhke. Bezuprechnost stilja, lakonichnost, taktilnye materialy, tsvetnye forzatsy, risunok na obreze.
