Im August 1998 sind in Amsterdam fünf bisher unbekannte Seiten aus Anne Franks Tagebuch an die Öffentlichkeit gelangt. Offenbar hatte der Vater, Otto Frank, diese Stellen - sie enthalten kritische Bemerkungen Annes über ihre Eltern - nicht zur Publikation freigegeben. Jetzt werden sie, nach Prüfung ihrer Authentizität, der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht und weltweit in alle autorisierten Ausgaben des Tagebuchs aufgenommen. Das Tagebuch von Anne Frank ist 1950 zum ersten Mal in einer deutschen Übersetzung veröffentlicht worden; 1955 erschien dieses als Taschenbuch im S. Fischer Verlag. 1986 kam die im Auftrag des Niederländischen Staatlichen Instituts für Kriegsdokumentation erarbeitete vollständige textkritische Ausgabe heraus, die 1988 in der Übersetzung von Mirjam Pressler im S. Fischer Verlag erschien. Eine durch den Anne-Frank-Fonds in Basel autorisierte Fassung von Otto Frank und Mirjam Pressler folgte 1991. Diese Ausgabe wird nun durch die bisher unveröffentlichten Seiten ergänzt und in einer schön gestalteten gebundenen Ausgabe vorgelegt. Für Anne Frank war ihr Tagebuch in der Enge des Verstecks Ersatz für eine Freundin und Gesprächspartnerin, Ventil für Sorgen und Unmutsausbrüche, zugleich Übungsfeld für ihre schriftstellerischen Talente.
