This book provides a critical account of the third sector and its future in Europe. It offers an original conceptualization of the third sector in its European manifestations alongside an overview of its major contours, including its structure, sources of support, and recent trends. It also assesses the impact of this sector in Europe which considers its contributions to European economic development, citizen well-being and human development. The Third Sector As A Renewable Resource for Europe presents the findings of the Third Sector Impact (TSI) project funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program (FP7). It recognises that in a time of social and economic distress, as well as enormous pressures on governmental budgets, the third sector and volunteering represent a unique ‘renewable resource’ for social and economic problem-solving and civic engagement in Europe.

In den letzten Jahren ist ein regelrechter Gründungsboom von Infrastruktureinrichtungen für bürgerschaftliches Engagement zu verzeichnen. Hierzu zählen Freiwilligenagenturen, Seniorenbüros, Selbsthilfekontaktstellen und Bürgerstiftungen ebenso wie Stadtteilbüros, Mehrgenerationenhäuser, Lokale Bündnisse für Familien sowie Stabs- oder Anlaufstellen in der Verwaltung. In diesem Band wird untersucht, welche Vor- und Nachteile die Vielfalt der Einrichtungen auf lokaler Ebene mit sich bringt. Welche Anlaufstellen, Büros und Agenturen sind noch zeitgemäß? Wie ergänzen sich die Angebote, wo überschneiden sie sich und wo stehen sie in Konkurrenz zueinander? Die Antworten auf diese Fragen bilden die Grundlage für eine Diskussion über die zukünftige Entwicklung der Engagementförderung vor Ort.

In dem Band werden anhand umfangreicher empirischer Befunde die arbeitsmarktrelevanten Funktionen des Dritten Sektors aus der Sicht gemeinnütziger Organisationen untersucht.

Rund 600.000 Vereine sind gegenwärtig als gemeinnützige Organisationen des Dritten Sektors in den Vereinsregistern eingetragen; jährlich kommen ca. 15.000 neu hinzu. Vereine sind Ausdruck von Selbstorganisation und Gemeinsinn. Dieser Band vermittelt ein facettenreiches Bild der Vereine als politische, soziale und auch wirtschaftliche Akteure.
