Astrolabes and Quadrants from Medieval England

Astrolabes and Quadrants from Medieval England

John Davis; Anthony Turner

The book presents a detailed description of all known astrolabes and quadrants made in England in the Middle Age, placing these instruments within their historical context. It analyses the socio-cultural and intellectual situation in England in the Early Middle Ages, which allowed astronomical instrument manufacture to develop and flourish in the fourteenth century. With additional consideration of the political situation in England and northern Europe during this period, including the Black Death and the beginning of the 100 Years War, the text also develops a series of interlocked hypotheses regarding the instruments' makers, owners and commissioners, revealing the influence of English instruments in continental Europe. The tools used to make these instruments are also described: these are largely undated and unsigned, but by reverse-engineering their designs and studying their metallurgy for the first time it is possible to assign likely dates of manufacture. Including seven specialized appendices and an extensive bibliography, the book is a detailed and copiously illustrated catalogue of all surviving Medieval English astrolabes and quadrants placed in their historical, social, and technical context.

Seeking Natural Knowledge in Later 17th Century England

Anthony Turner offers a view of the social and cultural context of the collecting of natural history in late 17th century England, constructed around the biography of Robert Plot. Seeking Natural Knowledge in Later 17th Century England seeks in particular to show the continuing intrinsic connection between chorography, antiquarianism, natural history and even, though to a lesser degree, applied mathematics, and the interest of such matters for the University of Oxford. An introductory chapter places chorography in its European cosmological context before looking at details of its study — in both its antiquarian and practical aspects — in Early Modern England, and the methods by which it was pursued there. Parallels are drawn with similar activity in France and Germany. In the following chapters, through an account of the work of Robert Plot, the way in which his writings established a new form of chorographical natural history investigation and writing is described, and how this work fed into, and in part provoked, the foundation of the Ashmolean Museum as a non-collegiate university institution in Oxford. Activity in the Museum during its early years is described, as is the work of the Philosophical Society that met within it and was closely associated. A final chapter describes the influence of Robert Plot and his successors up to the very early 18th century. Seven appendices supply an essential documentary underpinning for the work, offering new material on the burial of Plot, a detailed bibliography of his works, and an account of his portraits, before completing Gunther's documentation of the Oxford Society and its activities by the publication of several documents concerning it that have hitherto remained in manuscript.

Mathematical Instruments in the Collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France
Although several mathematical instruments of the first importance are contained in the collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, few of them are well known. The primary aim of the present work is therefore to make them available, through detailed descriptions and ample photographs, to all who concern themselves with the development of mathematical instrumentation. European armillary spheres are listed because of their close connection with the mathematical art of astronomy/astrology, as are two Arab-islamic solid celestial spheres because of their intrinsic relation with astrolabes from the same area. Complete balances are included in the catalogue, but the extensive collection of monetary weights has been left to one side together with details of the, often miscellaneous, weights in boxed-sets for money-changing. Within the various sections into which the catalogue is divided, items are arranged in as strict a chronological order as is possible, given the uncertainty of dating for some of them, without respect to their place of origin.
Luxury Trades and Consumerism in Ancien Régime Paris

Luxury Trades and Consumerism in Ancien Régime Paris

Since the 16th century, Paris has been a leading arbiter of taste and the ultimate source of luxury goods for Europe and the world. However, the origins of the luxury trades of Paris and their role in the wider economic development of France and Europe have been relatively little examined by historians. This volume provides an entry into some of the many questions raised by the growth of the luxury trades, by bringing together eight detailed case studies of specific trades with five more wide-ranging and theoretical contributions. It therefore offers both the results of entirely new research and a range of new perspectives and methodological reflections on the subject as a whole. Essential to economic and social historians of Early Modern France, the book will also be of interest to all students of material culture.

Biosensors have captured the imagination of the world's scientific and commercial communities by combining interdisciplinary skills of biologists, physicists, chemists and engineers to provide innovative solutions to analytical problems. Biosensors area pplicable to clinical diagnostics, food analysis, cell culture monitoring, environmental control and various military situations. Ever increasing demands for rapid and convenient analyses of a wide variety of materials in diverse locations has led to intense interest in the fusion of biology and electronics which mimics our principal concern: the effect of materials and environments on living systems. This series "Advances in Biosensors" presents a unique compendium of research papers, in which eminent authorities in the field of biosensors provide an up-to-date overview of their laboratory's contribution, summarizing the primary research as it has appeared, possible scattered, in the journal and conference literature, and reflecting on their findings. The net result will be intense, yet highly readable accounts of the state of the art at this leading edge of analytical technology.
