Je traiterai, dans cet ouvrage, non de l'origine de l'Homme, mais de celle des soci t s humaines. L'histoire s'occupe seulement de la seconde de ces origines. C'est la cosmogonie qu'il appartient de d voiler la premi re. L'histoire prend l'Homme au moment de son apparition sur la terre; et, sans s'inqui ter de son principe ontologique, cherche trouver le principe de sociabilit qui le porte se rapprocher de ses semblables, et sortir de l' tat d'isolement et d'ignorance o la nature semblait l'avoir r duit, en ne le distinguant presque pas, pour la forme, de plusieurs autres animaux. Je dirai quel est le principe divin que la Providence a implant dans son sein; je montrerai par quelles circonstances n cessaires, d pendantes du Destin, ce principe de perfectibilit se trouve r actionn ; comment il se d veloppe, et quels admirables secours il re oit de lui-m me, lorsque l'homme qu'il claire peut faire usage de sa volont pour adoucir de plus en plus, par la culture de son esprit, ce que son destin a de rigoureux et de sauvage: afin de porter sa civilisation et son bonheur au dernier degr de perfection dont ils sont susceptibles. Je vais me transporter, cet effet, une poque assez recul e de celle o nous vivons; et, raffermissant mes yeux, qu'un long pr jug pourrait avoir affaiblis, fixer, travers l'obscurit des si cles, le moment o la Race blanche, dont nous faisons partie, vint para tre sur la sc ne du monde. cette poque, dont plus tard je chercherai d terminer la date, la Race blanche tait encore faible, sauvage, sans lois, sans arts, sans culture d'aucune esp ce, d nu e de souvenirs, et trop d pourvue d'entendement pour concevoir m me une esp rance. Elle habitait les environs du p le bor al, d'o elle avait tir son origine.
