Aristotle

One of the most powerful, perceptive and influential works of criticism in Western literary history In his near-contemporary account of classical Greek tragedy, Aristotle examines the dramatic elements of plot, character, language and spectacle that combine to produce pity and fear in the audience, and asks why we derive pleasure from this apparently painful process. Taking examples from the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, the Poetics introduced into literary criticism such central concepts as mimesis ('imitation'), hamartia ('error') and katharsis ('purification'). Aristotle explains how the most effective tragedies rely on complication and resolution, recognition and reversals. The Poetics has informed thinking about drama ever since. Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Malcolm Heath

Aristotle: Introductory Readings

Aristotle; Gail Fine

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc
1996
pokkari
Drawn from the translations and editorial aids of Irwin and Fine's Aristotle, Selections (Hackett Publishing Co., 1995), this anthology will be most useful to instructors who must try to do justice to Aristotle in a semester-long ancient-philosophy survey, but it will also be appropriate for a variety of introductory-level courses. Introductory Readings provides accurate, readable, and integrated translations that allow the reader to follow Aristotle's use of crucial technical terms and to grasp the details of his argument. Included are adaptations of the glossary and notes that helped make its parent volume a singularly useful aid to the study of Aristotle.

Aristotle (384-322BC) is the philosopher who has most influence on the development of western culture, writing on a wide variety of subjects including the natural sciences as well as the more strictly philosophical topics of logic, metaphysics and ethics. To the poet Dante, he was simply 'the master of those who know'. The Ethics contains his views on what makes a good human life. While the work continues to stimulate and challenge modern philosophers, the general course of the argument is easily accessible to the non-specialist. Both as a key influence in the history of ideas and as a work containing unique insights into the human condition, this is a book that simply demands to be read.

Politics: Books I and II

Aristotle

This volume contains a clear and accurate translation of the first two books of Aristotle's Politics, together with a philosophical commentary. The Politics is a key document in Western political thought. In these first two books, Aristotle shows his mastery of political theory and practice, and raises many theoretical and practical political issues which are still with us today. In Book I, he argues vigorously for a political theory based on 'nature'. By nature, man is a 'political animal', one naturally fitted for life in a polis or state. Some people, however, are natural slaves; and women are by nature subordinate to men. Exchange and acquisition are natural, but not trading for profit. In Book II, by contrast, he sharply attacks Plato's two 'utopias', the Republic and the Laws, and also attacks three historical states reputed to be well-governed - Sparta, Crete, and Carthage. This volume is well suited to the requirements of students, including those who do not know Greek.

The third and fourth books of Aristotle's Politics discuss the fundamental questions in political philosophy: the nature of citizenship, the purpose of the state, the role of law, the merits of various constitutions. Richard Robinson's volume was the first to be published in the Clarendon Aristotle Series, and it remains a model of its kind - a lucid and provocative Introduction, an accurate but readable translation, and concise and critical notes. For this reissue, David Keyt has written a Supplementary Essay, in which he surveys and develops some recent ideas on the main themes of Politics III and IV. He also provides an up-to-date bibliography.

Aristotle: On the Heavens I & II

Aristotle: On the Heavens I & II

Aristotle

Aris Phillips Ltd

The first two books of Aristotle’s On the Heavens (De Caelo) offer perspectives on the cosmology of a thinker whose ideas in this area were considered authoritative by many until the seventeenth century. This new translation and commentary provide the modern reader with the opportunity to appraise Aristotle’s ideas in relation to the cosmologies of his predecessors. While tied to the thinking of the day, Aristotle nevertheless succeeded in placing cosmology on a new footing; indeed, as the commentary in this volume shows, his use of mathematics-style demonstration, along with his appeal to observation, in avoiding more standard forms of argument, resulted in a methodology that often shares common ground with today’s cosmologies. Greek text, with facing-page English translation, introduction, notes and commentary.

Classic criticism. This volume brings together the three most influential ancient Greek treatises on literature. Aristotle’s Poetics contains his treatment of Greek tragedy: its history, nature, and conventions, with details on poetic diction. Stephen Halliwell makes this seminal work newly accessible with a reliable text and a translation that is both accurate and readable. His authoritative introduction traces the work’s debt to earlier theorists (especially Plato), its distinctive argument, and the reasons behind its enduring relevance. The essay On the Sublime, usually attributed to “Longinus” (identity uncertain), was probably composed in the first century AD; its subject is the appreciation of greatness (“the sublime”) in writing, with analysis of illustrative passages ranging from Homer and Sappho to Plato and Genesis. In this edition, Donald A. Russell has judiciously revised and newly annotated the text and translation by W. Hamilton Fyfe and provides a new introduction. The treatise On Style, ascribed to an (again unidentifiable) Demetrius, was perhaps composed during the secod century BC. It is notable particularly for its theory and analysis of four distinct styles (grand, elegant, plain, and forceful). Doreen Innes’ fresh rendering of the work is based on the earlier Loeb translation by W. Rhys Roberts. Her new introduction and notes represent the latest scholarship. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Aristotle is in twenty-three volumes.
Metaphysics Books Z and H

Metaphysics Books Z and H

Aristotle

Clarendon Press

The books translated in this volume are seventh and eighth in the traditional ordering of Aristotle's Metaphysics. They are central to Aristotle's metaphysical system: in them he discusses the nature of perceptible 'substance' or reality. In particular, he compares the claims of matter and of form to be the basic reality of things, and he frequently contrasts his own view of form with the Platonic view. Several other topics are treated which are of central importance to his metaphysics, e.g. the notions of essence and definition, the status of universals, and the concept of a unity. David Bostock provides an authoritative guide to these difficult and important books, assuming no knowledge of Greek on the part of the reader. He offers a clear new translation that follows the original closely, and a thorough and careful philosophical commentary.

The Posterior Analytics contains some of Aristotle's most influential thoughts in logic, epistemology, metaphysics, and the philosophy of science. The first book expounds and develops the notions of a demonstrative argument and of a formal, axiomatized science; the second discusses a cluster of problems raised by the axioms or principles of such a science, and investigates in particular the theory of definition. For the second edition of this volume, the translation has been completely rewritten; and the commentary, which is done with the needs of philosophical readers in mind, has been thoroughly revised in the light of the scholarship of the last twenty years. There is an additional glossary and the bibliography has been extended.
Metaphysics: Books gamma, delta, and epsilon
The books translated in this volume are fourth, fifth, and sixth in the traditional ordering of Aristotle's Metaphysics. The nature and scope of metaphysics are discussed in gamma and epsilon. A subtle examination of the principles of non-contradiction and excluded middle occupies the latter part of gamma. Delta is in the form of a philosophical lexicon. All three books contain important material on being, substance, `accident', unity, truth, cause, and other such concepts. The translation is very close to the Greek, as an aid to students who cannot check the English version against the original. It is followed by an interpretative and critical commentary. For this new edition Mr Kirwan has added a substantial section of further comment on several central issues, and considerably expanded the bibliography.

Aristotle's De Anima has a claim to be the first systematic treatment of issues in the philosophy of mind, and also to be one of the greatest works on the subject. This volume provides an accurate translation of Books II and III, together with some sections of Book I; particular attention has been given to the translation of difficult terms, to help the student of philosophy who does not know Greek. A brief Introduction discusses Aristotle's approach to his subject, while the Notes provide a continuous philosophical commentary on the text. Since the original publication of this volume, Aristotle's philosophy of mind has been the focus of lively scholarly debate; for this revised edition, Christopher Shields has added a substantial review of this recent work, together with a new bibliography.
