THE BLURRING OF LINES It is imperative that now at once, while these stupendous events are still clear in my mind, I should set them down with that exactness of detail which time may blur. But even as I do so, I am overwhelmed by the wonder of the fact that it should be our little group of the "Lost World"-Professor Challenger, Professor Summerlee, Lord John Roxton, and myself-who have passed through this amazing experience. When, some years ago, I chronicled in the Daily Gazette our epoch-making journey in South America, I little thought that it should ever fall to my lot to tell an even stranger personal experience, one which is unique in all human annals and must stand out in the records of history as a great peak among the humble foothills which surround it. The event itself will always be marvellous, but the circumstances that we four were together at the time of this extraordinary episode came about in a most natural and, indeed, inevitable fashion. I will explain the events which led up to it as shortly and as clearly as I can, though I am well aware that the fuller the detail upon such a subject the more welcome it will be to the reader, for the public curiosity has been and still is insatiable. It was upon Friday, the twenty-seventh of August-a date forever memorable in the history of the world-that I went down to the office of my paper and asked for three days' leave of absence from Mr. McArdle, who still presided over our news department. The good old Scotchman shook his head, scratched his dwindling fringe of ruddy fluff, and finally put his reluctance into words.
The Boer War (1899-1902) was one of the last of the romantic wars, pitting a sturdy, stubborn pioneer people, fighting to establish the independence of their tiny nation, against the might of the British Empire at its peak. Farwell captures the incredible feats, the personal heroism, the unbelievable folly, and the many incidents of humor as well as tragedy.
In Beyond the City, the desire for money and romance drives the characters beyond the typical boundaries of their middle class Victorian lives. Lust, deceit, and financial scandals rock their placid world.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of 13 Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1903-1904, by Arthur Conan Doyle. The book was first published on March 7, 1905 by Georges Newnes, Ltd and in a Colonial edition by Longmans. 30,000 copies were made of the initial print run. The US edition by McClure, Phillips & Co. added another 28,000 to the run. This was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes had "died" in "The Adventure of the Final Problem". Having published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901-1902 (although setting it before Holmes' death) Doyle came under intense pressure to revive his famous character.

First published in 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet" marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. At the outset of the story we encounter Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Dr. Watson who has just returned to London from the Second Anglo-Afghan war where he had sustained a shoulder injury which has forced him to leave the army and is now in search of a place to live. He learns from an acquaintance of the availability of a flat for which the current prospective occupant is looking for a roommate to split the rent. The flat is 221B Baker Street, the current prospective occupant, Sherlock Holmes. Upon meeting Sherlock, Watson quickly learns that Mr. Holmes is a consulting detective and gets swept up in the mystery of a fresh murder case being investigated by Scotland Yard. The two investigate an abandoned house off the Brixton Road where a body is found in a blood-stained room with the word "rache," German for "revenge" scrawled on the wall in blood. What follows is a tale of love and revenge which would launch the literary career of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the franchise of what may be arguably the world's most famous literary detective. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
A selection of the most thrilling detective stories ever written by the master storyteller. Sherlock Holmes, the world's cleverest detective, sets forth in this collection of six extraordinary stories to solve some of the most intriguing cases of his career. What was the mysterious 'speckled band' that a woman referred to with her dying breath? What do the dancing men signify and why do they bring death in their wake? Is there really a league of red-headed men, or is it a conspiracy so audacious that only Holmes can sense it? Will Sherlock Holmes meet his end at the hands of the evil Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls? The cases of Sherlock Holmes have held readers spellbound ever since they were first published. In 1927, the stories in this volume were chosen by the author himself as some of the best he had written. Introduced here by Ruskin Bond, The Very Best of Sherlock Holmes presents the great detective in all his brilliant glory for a new generation of readers.

It is the first story to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes, who would later become one of the most famous and iconic literary detective characters, with long-lasting interest and appeal. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to his companion Doctor Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."

Sir Nigel is a historical novel set during the Hundred Years' War, by the British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Written in 1906, it is a fore-runner to Doyle's earlier novel The White Company, and describes the early life of that book's hero Sir Nigel Loring in the service of King Edward III at the start of the Hundred Years' War. Dame History is so austere a lady that if one has been so ill-advised as to take a liberty with her one should hasten to make amends by repentance and confession. Events have been transposed to the extent of some few months in this narrative in order to preserve the continuity and evenness of the story. . . . -- Arthur Conan Doyle

The Adventure of the Devil's Foot By Arthur Conan Doyle
This new illustrated edition of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes has added explanations as sidenotes to help those readers who are not familiar with some of the phrases used by the author and his characters--after all the stories were written over 120 years ago. Some of the author's phrases are still in use in modern-day British English and these are described to make the text clearer to English speakers from outside of the UK, or to those who do not speak English as a first language. Also included is some background information on places, names and terms used in the stories. It is not essential to consult the notes when reading this book, however, it is hoped that the explanations will enhance the reader's enjoyment of the stories by giving them some insights that might otherwise have been missed. The book is illustrated with Sidney Paget's beautiful drawings that so help to visualize the stories. All of the drawings from the first publication have been included.
