Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- This book by Arthur Conan Doyle is the background story to his earlier novel The White Company, and describes the early life of that book's hero Nigel Loring, a knight in the service of King Edward III in the first phase of the Hundred Years' War. The character is loosely based on the historical knight Neil Loring. Chivalric deeds, bloody battles, bouts with ships, deeds of arms, chevauch es, robber barons and clever archers abound in this nice prequel to The White Company which follows the younger years of Sir Nigel, a minor noble of a house of great renown for the bravery of his knights, now down on its fortune after the premature death of its Lord (whose memory of heroic deeds is humorously capped by a I-slipped-on-a-bar-of soap kind of demise) and plagued by greedy men of the cloth brandishing injunctions like swords. The young and stalwart (and broke) squire Nigel dreams to live the life of the true knight, full of justice, honor, loyalty, courtesy and bravery. "Young and hot-headed with wild visions of dashing deeds and knight errantry", as skilled as candid, Nigel embarks in the adventure of his life and the reader follows him as he encounters his chivalrous warhorse, faces bureaucrat clergy, obstructs petty nobles and promises the love of his life to return after "worshipfully winning worship" following his King and Prince in France, "that land of chivalry and glory, the stage where name and fame were to be". From the English countryside to Poitiers, Doyle depicts the society of the time, its customs and particularly the flaws and virtues of its human types, the social inequality, with many parallels to the contemporary world. In the end, Sir Nigel returns to England where he weds Lady Mary. Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- Arthur Conan Doyle was a prolific writer, and his Sherlock Holmes stories, while the best known of his work, were only a fraction of what he wrote. This book is a collection of twelve short stories broken up into two topics; six stories on terror and six on mystery. Doyle didn't write too many mystery stories that did NOT involve Sherlock Holmes, and these are some of them. As is well-known, Doyle was a fanatic spiritualist, and many of the tales of terror deal with some strange stuff - weird creatures living in the upper atmosphere, for example. Conan Doyle excels at the Short Story department too. Even without Holmes, Doyle's naturally and incredibly talented legendary detective, Doyle rocks this short story arena Contents: Tales of Terror: 1. The Horror of the Heights2. The Leather Funnel3. The New Catacomb4. The Case of Lady Sannox5. The Terror of Blue John Gap6. The Brazilian Cat Tales of Mystery1. The Lost Special2. The Beetle-Hunter3. The Man with the Watches4. The Japanned Box5. This exciting knight-in-armor story was the result of a meticulous and arduous research by Doyle on the time period of Edward III; about Hundred Years' War; the campaigns of Edward, the Black Prince and the Middle Ages in general. When published in 1891, 'The White Company', was an instant success and was regarded by Doyle in his own words as "the most complete, satisfying and ambitious thing I have ever done". In this romantic adventure tale Doyle gives a charming historical and geographic description of the Europe during the Hundred Years' War by exposing the reader to characters full of nobility, chivalry and warrior attitude. The protagonist of the story is the young and innocent Alleyne Edricson who is freshly out exploring the world after a being raised in a monastery. Alleyne's straightforward nature brings him two friends in the form of the vigorous archer Samkin Aylward and the hilarious and extremely strong John of Hordle. Together they join 'The White Company' - a free company of archers led by the brave and admired Knight Sir Nigel Loring - and Alleyne becomes the armour-bearer to Sir Nigel Loring. Soon 'The White Company' heads out to France and Spain in a quest brimming with hilarious situations, sword fights, danger and carnage. Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- A Bigger Challenge for Professor Challenger In this book, the intrepid foursome who encountered pre-historic dinosaurs in "The Lost World" are brought together to face an even bigger challenge...the death of the human race...and all other species on Earth Challenger sends telegrams asking his three companions from The Lost World - Edward Malone, Lord John Roxton, and Professor Summerlee - to join him at his home outside London, and instructs each of them to 'bring oxygen'. On arrival they are ushered into a sealed room, along with Challenger and his wife. In the course of his researches into various phenomena, Challenger has predicted that the Earth is moving into a belt of poisonous ether which, based on its effect on the people of Sumatra earlier in the day, he expects to stifle humanity. Challenger seals them in the room with cylinders of oxygen, which he (correctly) believes will counter the effect of the ether. The five wait out the Earth's passage through the poison belt as they watch the world outside die and machines run amok. (According to Victorian values - or to Doyle's understanding of them - Challenger's servants are left outside the sealed room, and they continue to perform their duties until the ether overtakes them.) Finally, the last of the oxygen cylinders is emptied, and they open a window, ready to face death. To their surprise, they do not die, and conclude the Earth has now passed through the poison belt. They journey through the dead countryside in Challenger's car, finally arriving in London. They encounter only one survivor, an elderly, bed-ridden woman prescribed oxygen for her health. After returning to Challenger's house, they discover that the effect of the ether is temporary, and the world reawakens with no knowledge that they have lost any time at all. Eventually Challenger and his companions manage to convince the world what happened - a task made easier by the tremendous amount of death and destruction caused by runaway machines and fires that took place while the world was asleep - and humanity is shocked into placing a higher value on life. The Sign of the Four has a complex plot involving service in East India Company, India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts (the Four of the title) and two corrupt prison guards. It presents the detective's drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in A Study in Scarlet. It also introduces Doctor Watson's future wife, Mary Morstan.
