The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set in 1889 largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Holmes and Watson investigate the case. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his apparent death in "The Final Problem", and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character's eventual revival. One of the most famous stories ever written, in 2003, the book was listed as number 128 of 200 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel". In 1999, a poll of "Sherlockians" ranked it as the best of the four Holmes novels. In 1902, Doyle's original manuscript of the book was broken up into individual leaves as part of a promotional campaign by Doyle's American publisher - they were used in window displays by individual booksellers. Out of an estimated 185-190 leaves, only 37 are known still to exist, including all the leaves from Chapter 11, held by the New York Public Library. Other leaves are owned by university libraries and private collectors. A newly rediscovered example was sold at auction in 2012 for US$158,500. (wikipedia.org)
The Lost World is a science fiction novel by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1912, concerning an expedition to a plateau in the Amazon basin of South America where prehistoric animals still survive. It was originally published serially in the Strand Magazine and illustrated by New-Zealand-born artist Harry Rountree during the months of April-November 1912. The character of Professor Challenger was introduced in this book. The novel also describes a war between indigenous people and a vicious tribe of ape-like creatures. The idea of prehistoric animals surviving into the present day was not new, but had already been introduced by Jules Verne in Journey to the Center of the Earth. In Jules Verne's book, published in 1864, the creatures live under the earth in and around a subterranean sea. In 1915, the Russian scientist Vladimir Obruchev produced his own version of the "lost world" theme in the novel Plutonia, which places the prehistoric species in a fictional space inside the hollow Earth connected to the surface via an opening in the Russian far north. In 1916, Edgar Rice Burroughs published The Land That Time Forgot. His "lost world" was discovered by German submariners in Antarctica. In addition to lending its title to this subgenre, the title of Doyle's work was reused by Michael Crichton in his 1995 novel The Lost World, a sequel to Jurassic Park, and its film adaptation, The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Two of the characters in Crichton's novel mention a palaeontologist called John Roxton. ... (wikipedia.org)

Sherlock Holmes. The archetype of the cunning detective, who always gets to the bottom of his environment and, of course, the criminals with almost uncanny combinatorial skills. Highly intelligent, analytical and yet only worth half without his sidekick Dr. Watson. With Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle created a character that is one of the most famous in world literature and has been adapted countless times for film and television. For this reason alone, his works are an integral part of any serious world literature library. Moreover, Doyle can be counted among the founders of the modern detective novel. British author Arthur Conan Doyle's collection of short stories titled The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes was originally released in the latter part of 1893 under the year 1894. It was first released by G. Newnes Ltd. in the UK and Harper & Brothers in the US in February 1894. Following The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, it was the second anthology to feature the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. It featured Sidney Paget's illustrations, the same as the first. The Adventures numbers 13 to 24 were the titles of the twelve tales when they were first published in The Strand Magazine in December 1892 and December 1893. The subtitle "XXIV.-The Adventure of the Final Problem" was used when "The Final Problem" was released, for example. With the exception of "The Final Problem," which first appeared in McClure's Magazine, all of the pieces were first published in Harper's Weekly in the United States. He was inspired by reader demand to write The Hound of the Baskervilles, a Holmes tale that takes place before "The Final Problem," in 1901-1922. The aftermath of "The Final Problem," in which it is revealed that Holmes actually survived, serves as the opening episode of a new series the following year called The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
