'His Last Bow', the title story of this collection, tells how Sherlock Holmes is brought out of retirement to help the Government fight the German threat at the approach of the First World War. The Prime Minister himself requests Holmes's services to hunt down the remarkable German agent, Von Bork. Several of the detective's earlier cases complete the volume, including 'Wisteria Lodge', 'The Bruce-Partington Plans', and 'The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax'. In 'The Dying Detective', Dr Watson is horrified to discover Holmes at death's door from a mysterious tropical disease as his friend lays a trap for a murderer.

The Valley of Fear (Deseret Alphabet edition)
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish physician and writer. Although he wrote a number of series, such as his Professor Challenger stories, he is by far best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes. In later life he gained notoriety for his belief in spiritualism and the Cottingley Fairies. The Valley of Fear (1914/5) is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel. Here a fraternal organization in an American mining community is used as a front for terrorist activities against mine owners, and the efforts to bring them down result in a murder in England years later. The Valley of Fear is also notable for being one of the only two instances in the Sherlockian canon Professor James Moriarty is mentioned. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

Santiago Roncagliolo

Written in 1912, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World is the origin of all the many modern-day dinosaur books and films. As an adventure story it has everything - dangerous crises abound, in several exotic locations, with ape-men and a host of strange and terrifying beasts, hair-raising escapes, secret tunnels, and the occasional damsel in distress thrown in for good measure. But behind all the peril and derring-do, Conan Doyle is gently satirising the idea of Science as a pure discipline, unsullied by thoughts of personal gain; and ridiculing those close-minded, hide-bound intellectuals who possess the qualifications, but not the courage, to search diligently for the truth.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL (22 May 1859 - 7 July 1930) was a British writer, who created the character Sherlock Holmes. Originally a physician, in 1887 he published A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and more than fifty short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle was a prolific writer; other than Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement", helped to popularise the mystery of the Mary Celeste. Doyle struggled to find a publisher for his work. His first work featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, A Study in Scarlet, was written in 3 weeks when he was 27 and taken by Ward Lock & Co on 20 November 1886, giving Doyle 25 ( 2700 today) for all rights to the story. The piece appeared one year later in the Beeton's Christmas Annual and received good reviews in The Scotsman and the Glasgow Herald. ... In 1903, Doyle published his first Holmes short story in ten years, "The Adventure of the Empty House", in which it was explained that only Moriarty had fallen, but since Holmes had other dangerous enemies--especially Colonel Sebastian Moran--he had arranged to also be perceived as dead. Holmes was ultimately featured in a total of 56 short stories--the last published in 1927--and four novels by Doyle, and has since appeared in many novels and stories by other authors. ... From 1888 to 1906, Doyle wrote seven historical novels, which he and many critics regarded as his best work. He also authored nine other novels, and later in his career (1912-29) five narratives, two of novel length, featuring the irascible scientist Professor Challenger. The Challenger stories include what is probably his best-known work after the Holmes oeuvre, The Lost World. His historical novels include Sir Nigel and its follow-up The White Company, set in the Middle Ages. He was a prolific author of short stories, including two collections set in Napoleonic times featuring the French character Brigadier Gerard. ... (wikipedia.org)

Only 11 complete copies of the magazine in which the story first appeared, Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887, are known to exist now and they have considerable value. Although Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories featuring Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels in the original canon. The novel was followed by The Sign of the Four, published in 1890. A Study in Scarlet was the first work of detective fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool.
