Sherlock Holmes is one of the most beloved fictional detectives that has graced English literature, and we have Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to thank for it. Doyle began enchanting readers with Sherlock Holmes' deductive skills and crime fighting abilities in the late 1800s and early 1900s and has remained popular to this day. Holmes has appeared in numerous film adaptations and plays. Sometimes, unfortunately, over time, liberties are taken with the story. This edition is a reprint of one of the earliest available editions (1892); it was originally published in 1886. No 'liberties' have been taken with this text. Enjoy "A Study in Scarlet," the novel in which Doyle first introduced the world to the amazing Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr. Watson, just as Doyle wrote it.

A Scandal in Bohemia / Un scandale en Bohême
Read this classic detective story in French and English. "A Scandal in Bohemia" follows Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as the former takes on both a crime case and--in a unique twist--a love interest. Od on Bilingue makes reading in two languages fun and simple. All paragraphs are numbered and appropriately placed side-by-side. Save for a few exceptions, all paragraphs begin and end on the same page, thus eliminating unnecessary page-flipping.

The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. If ever a writer needed an introduction Arthur Conan Doyle would not be considered that man. After all, Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the foremost literary detective of any age. Add to this canon his stories of science fiction and his poems, his historical novels, his political campaigning, his efforts in establishing a Court Of Appeal and there is little room for anything else. Except he was also an exceptional writer of short stories of the horrific and macabre. Something very different from what you might expect. Born in Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland. From 1876 - 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh following which he was employed as a doctor on the Greenland whaler Hope of Peterhead in 1880 and, after his graduation, as a ship's surgeon on the SS Mayumba during a voyage to the West African coast in 1881. Arriving in Portsmouth in June of that year with less than 10 ( 700 today 13]) to his name, he set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove, Southsea. The practice was initially not very successful. While waiting for patients, Conan Doyle again began writing stories and composed his first novel The Mystery of Cloomber. Although he continued to study and practice medicine his career was now firmly set as a writer. And thereafter great works continued to pour out of him. Many of these stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth. Many samples are at our youtube channel http: //www.youtube.com/user/PortablePoetry?feature=mhee The full volume can be purchased from iTunes, Amazon and other digital stores.

The book is a glorious effort on the part of the author to record the impressions that he formed during his visit to the fronts of the Western Allies during World War I. The book was written in appreciation of the valiant and bold soldiers who fought for their countrymen and whose efforts were being belittled due to increasing rumors

Mr. Hungerton, her father, really was the most tactless person upon earth, -a fluffy, feathery, untidy cockatoo of a man, perfectly good-natured, but absolutely centered upon his own silly self. If anything could have driven me from Gladys, it would have been the thought of such a father-in-law. I am convinced that he really believed in his heart that I came round to the Chestnuts three days a week for the pleasure of his company, and very especially to hear his views upon bimetallism, a subject upon which he was by way of being an authority

Mr. Sherlock Holmes, who was usually very late in the mornings, save upon those not infrequent occasions when he was up all night, was seated at the breakfast table. I stood upon the hearth-rug and picked up the stick which our visitor had left behind him the night before. It was a fine, thick piece of wood, bulbous-headed, of the sort which is known as a "Penang lawyer." Just under the head was a broad silver band nearly an inch across. "To James Mortimer, M. R. C. S., from his friends of the C. C. H.," was engraved upon it, with the date "1884." It was just such a stick as the old-fashioned family practitioner used to carry-dignified, solid, and reassuring.
