The world of images is radically challenging our understanding of race and politics. This book examines the changing representation of race and ethnicity in the visual culture of the first decade of the 21st century - a period marked by the traumas of 9/11, the 'war on terror', and the crisis of neoliberal capitalism. Through this exploration the author highlights the contradictions of a media culture in which discourses of multiculturalism, cosmopolitanism and cultural hybridity are juxtaposed with images of Islamophobia, ethnic nationalism and anti-immigrant racism. In contrast to dominant approaches the book situates racial, postcolonial, diasporic and feminist aesthetics in relation to shifts in global capitalism, class and commodity culture. Through an analysis of global news media, independent film, television drama, Hollywood cinema, science fiction, horror, photography, experimental digital art and pop culture it affirms the continued political significance of the visual and the body in contemporary culture.

Stem cell research offers unprecedented opportunities for developing new medical therapies for debilitating diseases and a new way to explore fundamental questions of biology. Stem cells are unspecialized cells that can self-renew indefinitely and also differentiate into more mature cells with specialized functions. Research on human embryonic stem cells, however, is controversial, given the diverse views held in our society about the moral and legal status of the early embryo. The controversy has encouraged provocative and conflicting claims both inside and outside the scientific community about the biology and biomedical potential of both adult and embryonic stem cells.

Discovery of one-dimensional material carbon nanotubes in 1991 by the Japanese physicist Dr. Sumio Iijima has resulted in voluminous research in the field of carbon nanotubes for numerous applications, including possible replacement of silicon used in the fabrication of CMOS chips. One interesting feature of carbon nanotubes is that these can be metallic or semiconducting with a bandgap depending on their diameter. In search of non-classical devices and related technologies, both carbon nanotube-based field-effect transistors and metallic carbon nanotube interconnects are being explored extensively for emerging logic devices and very large-scale integration. Although various models for carbon nanotube-based transistors and interconnects have been proposed in the literature, an integrated approach to make them compatible with the present simulators is yet to be achieved. This book makes an attempt in this direction for the carbon-based electronics through fundamentals of solid-state physics and devices.
