This book is the first comprehensive, research-based description of the development, structure, and use of Welsh English, a contact-induced variety of English spoken in the British Isles. Present-day accents and dialects of Welsh English are the combined outcome of historical language shift from Welsh to English, continued bilingualism, intense contacts between Wales and England, and multicultural immigration. As a result, Welsh English is a distinctive, regionally and sociolinguistically diverse variety, whose status is not easily categorized. In addition to existing research, the present volume utilizes a wide range of spoken corpus data gathered from across Wales in order to describe the phonology, lexis, and grammar of the variety. It includes discussion of sociolinguistic and cultural contexts, and of ongoing change in Welsh English. The place that Welsh English occupies in relation to other Englishes in the Inner and Outer Circles is also analysed. The book is accessible to the non-specialist, but of particular use to scholars, teachers, and students interested in English in Wales, Britain, and the world. It provides an unparelleled resource on this long-standing and vibrant variety.

This book is a product of the initial phase of a broader study evaluating the voluntary and regulatory compliance protocols that are used to account for the contributions of forests in U. S.-based greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation programs. The research presented here is particularly concerned with these protocols’ use of the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data to describe forest conditions, ownership, and management scenarios, and is oriented towards providing regulators and other interested parties with an objective comparison of the options, uncertainties, and opportunities available to offset GHG emissions through forest management. Chapters focus on the protocols for recognizing forest carbon offsets in the California carbon cap-and-trade program, as described in the Compliance Offset Protocol; U. S. Forest Projects (California Air Resources Board, 2011). Readers will discover the protocols used for quantifying the offset of GHG emissionsthrough forest-related project activity. As such, its scope includes a review of the current methods used in voluntary and compliance forest protocols, an evaluation of the metrics used to assign baselines and determine additionality in the forest offset protocols, an examination of key quantitative and qualitative components and assumptions, and a discussion of opportunities for modifying forest offset protocols, in light of the rapidly changing GHG-related policy and regulatory environment. Finally, the report also discusses accounting and policy issues that create potential barriers to participation in the California cap-and-trade program, and overall programmatic additionality in addressing the needs of a mitigation strategy.

The first living donor womb transplant took place in the UK in early 2023 at the Oxford Transplant Centre, garnering attention from around the world and offering a life-changing opportunity for many women. This milestone was more than 25 years in the making. In this compelling and accessible book, the surgeons behind the procedure offer extraordinary insight into the long and winding road they have walked - through scientific breakthroughs (as well as dead ends), innovative spin-off surgeries and techniques, and surmounting opposition and resistance from many quarters - to culminate in successful and sustainable living and deceased donor programmes and the first baby in the UK born to a mother with a transplanted uterus. The authors address the complex issues of ethics, legality, and eligibility criteria surrounding the transplant and its development and, looking ahead, they explore future opportunities for uterine transplantation. With personal reflections from many different members of the transplant team, this book celebrates the commitment, innovation, and collaboration of the people behind cutting-edge science. A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to Womb Transplant UK, the charity responsible for funding the transplants to date.

For students, teachers and smart-thinkers, our carefully structured, jargon-free series provides the base knowledge needed to get your head around complicated theories of brilliant intellectuals. Written in an accessible and engaging way, each book takes you through the life and influences of one great thinker, before taking a deep dive into three of their key theories in plain English. Smart thinking made easy Jean-Paul Sartre was a novelist, playwright and journalist - but most of all, he was a philosopher. One of the most important figures in 20th-century philosophy, he is best known for his writing on existentialism. Beginning with his life story to find out who he was as a person, this book then goes on to look at how events and people impacted upon his thinking, before examining his three most important ideas in detail. Chapters three and four explore two key concepts within his existentialism: phenomenological ontology and radical freedom, while the final chapter looks at his understanding of responsibility. While these ideas can seem complex, this book aims to guide you through Sartre's fascinating concepts in an accessible and jargon-free way to allow you to discover an enriching and exciting philosophy.

Quicken stresses a sudden renewal of life or activity, especially in something inert--new blood needed to vivify the dying. Redeem--to gain or regain possession of something, or someone in exchange for payment. In this case, the payment was His own blood.

Using the latest empirical and conceptual research for readers in economics, business, and policy, this volume surveys the key components of innovation policy and the social returns to innovation investment. In advanced economies like the United States, innovation has long been recognized as a central force for increasing economic prosperity and human welfare. Today, the US government promotes innovation through various mechanisms, including tax credits for private-sector research, grant support for basic and applied research, and institutions like the Small Business Innovation Research Program of the National Science Foundation. Drawing on the latest empirical and conceptual research, Innovation and Public Policy surveys the key components of innovation policy and the social returns to innovation investment. It examines mechanisms that can advance the pace of invention and innovative activity, including expanding the research workforce through schooling and immigration policy and funding basic research. It also considers scientific grant systems for funding basic research, including those at institutions like the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and investigates the role of entrepreneurship policy and of other institutions that promote an environment conducive to scientific breakthroughs.
