An Institutional Approach to the Göta kanal

This book is based on an institutional evolutionary theoretical view to the Göta kanal. Canals were the major transport infrastructure system besides roads and maritime transport until railroads were introduced. The canal studied is the Swedish Göta kanal project during the preparation and construction phase from 1800–1832. Thus, the Göta kanal, and the canal-era, is seen from a technological, an economic and a political perspective. Comparisons are made with two contemporary major canal-projects; the Erie Canal in the USA (1817–1825) and the Caledonian Canal in Britain (1804–1822). It is argued that the Göta kanal project, as Sweden's Mega Project of its time, represented an important development step in Sweden as regards learning and innovation and became a starting point for Swedish transport infrastructure projects in the time to come, primarily the railways.

This book discusses the economics of transport infrastructure and the economic theorizing around transport infrastructure from 1850 to today. Transport infrastructure systems are continuously evolving over time. Since the mid-1800s these systems have grown in complexity and outreach. They have been important drivers of economic development but have also been important as economic agents in themselves. Over time transport infrastructure systems have taken on different functions as providers of simpler transport services or more developed value chain components. Transport infrastructure has also been a source for different arguments about economic theory and practice. Transport infrastructure systems are analysed from an institutional perspective where the long-term development of the ownership and financing of the systems, as well as the connection to different policy areas are elaborated. A longitudinal study of Sweden’s transport infrastructurepolicy is used to exemplify driving factors causing change and transformation of the systems over time with different scale and scope.

Erik Gustaf Geijer wrote richly in the historical dimension but the spirit is that of moral philosophy, heavily influenced by the British moralists, notably Adam Smith. This collection enhances our understanding of how cultural giants across Europe were influenced and inspired by British classical liberalism. Daniel Klein, professor in Economics, George Mason UniversityErik Gustaf Geijer (17831847) was a Swedish eclectic intellectual of international renown. Over time Geijers interests converged into a comprehensive vision of political and economic liberty. Here, he measures up well with scholars like David Hume, Alexis de Tocqueville and Adam Smith. Freedom in Swedenthus introduces a pioneer in an era that saw the emergence of social sciences and was the precursor of modern society. Björn Hasselgrenhas a PhD from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and is a Senior Fellow at the liberal think tank Timbro. He is also connected to Uppsala University as a guest researcher in Economic History. Peter C Hoggis an experienced translator of Swedish and Scandinavian texts with a background at the Scandinavian Department in the British Library.
