This fascinating psychological portrait, strikingly different from the one given in the Autobiography, is of a man who was abused by both his parents, who never shook off the conflicts of his troubled youth, and whose internalized messages of racial ambivalence continued to plague him throughout his brilliant career. As no other book has done, Malcolm traces the entire life of this heroic figure, from his birth in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925, his youthful struggles with deprivation and drug addiction, his life-threatening prison experience and conversion to Islam, through his emergence as a Muslim leader and spokesman for a restless America, and finally to his death by assassination. Exhaustively researched, this first comprehensive biography of Malcolm X is based on the oral and written accounts of over 400 people who knew him, as well as government files and Malcolm's letters. ...paints a rich, full, and fair portrait of the man...what it gives us is not a diminished Malcolm, for his heroism, his brilliance...charm...wit...necessity have never been as sympathetically or absorbingly rendered.-The Los Angeles Times

New third edition It's 2025. Massive wildfires have engulfed the southwestern U. S. Society has come apart at the seams. Armed with a crossbow, Mike Wade roams the dystopian deserts in search of his captive daughter Kara. The narrative proceeds in four stages: The Road, The River, The Desert, The Sea. The problem for Michael Wade and his family is that his daughter Kara had been taking a year of college abroad in Mexico to specialize in Spanish. She hasn't been able to make it home, and Wade has set off from Vermont by train and on foot, with his backpack and essentials, including a crossbow, to rescue her. Along the way he joins other refugees on his treacherous journey to the Southwest, including Phoebe Tate, a funky young lady who made jewelry in the desert, Wiley James, a trucker from Wyoming who was forced to abandon his rig, and Jonesy, a riverboat captain who takes them down the Colorado River. Society has broken down; there is no broadcast news from the West anymore, just quasi El Presidente's propaganda and creepily soothing explanations for everything. Only the trains run here and there; oil production and imports have slowed to a trickle. Most people don't have fuel and the train system has been left intact to provide the regime with its necessities. Wade only knows that his last communication from Kara came from Sierra Vista in southern Arizona. He'll have to get there by whichever way he can, by river and desert.

A complete reference to AppleScript, the popular programming language that gives both power users and sophisticated enterprise customers the important ability to automate repetitive tasks and customize applications. As the Macintosh continues to expand and solidify its base in the multimedia and publishing industries, AppleScript is and important tool on this platform for creating sophisticated time- and money-saving workflow applications (applets). These applets automate the processing and management of digital video, imaging, print, and web-based material. AppleScript is also gaining a foothold in scientific programming, as technical organizations adopt G4 CPU-based systems for advanced computing and scientific analysis. Finally, "power users" and script novices will find that AppleScript is a great every-day Mac programming tool, similar to Perl on Windows NT or Unix. In this reference, AppleScript programmers will find: detailed coverage of AppleScript Version 1.4 and beyond on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X; complete descriptions of AppleScript language features, such as data types, flow-control statements, functions, object-oriented features (script objects and libraries), and other syntactical elements; and descriptions and hundreds of code samples on programming the various "scriptable" system components, such as the Finder, File Sharing, File Exchange, Network scripting, Web scripting, Apple System Profiler, the ColorSync program, and the numerous powerful language extensions called "osax" or scripting additions. The book covers updates and improvements with practical, easy to understand tips, including using AppleScript as a tool for distributed computing, a development that Apple Computer calls "program linking over IP". Programmers can now do distributed computing with Macs over TCP/IP networks, including controlling remote applications with AppleScript and calling AppleScript methods on code libraries that are located on other machines. It also covers using the Sherlock find application to automate web and network searching and insights on scripting new Apple technologies such as Apple Data Detectors, Folder Actions, Keychain Access, and Apple Verifier.
