2013 Reprint of 1927 American Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Revised second edition of this classic text. Although the original text was published in 1923 it has been used as a textbook in many fields including linguistics, philosophy, language, cognitive science and most recently semantics and semiotics in general. The book has been in print continuously since 1923. Richards sets forth a contextual theory of Signs: that Words and Things are connected through their occurrence together with things. The book would later influence A. J. Ayer's "Language, Truth and Logic,", and both the Richards-Ogden book and the Ayer book would, in turn, influence Alec King and Martin Ketley in the writing of their book "The Control of Language," which appeared in 1939. This book would in turn influence C. S. Lewis in the writing of his defense of natural law and objective values, "The Abolition of Man (1943)." It is accompanied by the two supplementary essays by Bronislaw Malinowski and F. G. Crookshank.

""The Foundations of Aesthetics"" by I. A. Richards is a comprehensive exploration of the nature of beauty and art. The book delves into the philosophical and psychological aspects of aesthetics, examining the ways in which people perceive and appreciate art. Richards argues that aesthetics is not only concerned with the sensory qualities of art, but also with the emotional and intellectual responses it elicits. He explores the role of language in aesthetics, and how it is used to express and communicate aesthetic experiences. The book also considers the relationship between aesthetics and morality, and the ways in which art can influence ethical behavior. ""The Foundations of Aesthetics"" is a seminal work in the field of aesthetics, and is essential reading for anyone interested in the nature of beauty and art. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Bacon, Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume - to his five great predecessors Bentham acknowledges his debt. It is the purpose of the present volume to give some indication of the debt which future generations may acknowledge to Jeremy Bentham, when he has taken his place as sixth in the line of the great tradition—and in some respects its most original representative.
