As Canada wrestles with the legacy of colonialism, a new understanding of the church is emerging. Racialized and marginalized congregants are daring to make sense of their own experiences and interpretations of Christianity, turning their faith traditions into a force for decolonization. Decolonizing Church brings together varied theological voices to explore how Christian scholars and church leaders can reconfigure theology, ethics, and church practices. The volume aims to open conversations about how churches can engage the task of redressing the colonial legacy and its harms, and, in so doing, model the gratuitous disruptive power of the good news. Contributors come from diverse Indigenous, immigrant, racialized, LGBTQ2AI, disability, and geographical communities and represnet different genders, which shapes the way they speak and write, practise theology, and view church structures. Readers will find a range of genres including storytelling, ethnographic narrative, personal and biblical reflection, and practical wisdom. Drawing on decolonial thinking, the book offers other ways of knowing, being, and doing church. Decolonizing Church blends theory and practice as it addresses justice concerns that are at the forefront for the church, for theological education, and for society at large.

This Spot of Ground: Spiritual Baptists in Toronto represents the first detailed exploration of an African-Caribbean religion in the context of contemporary migration to Canada. Toronto is home to Canadas largest black population, a significant portion of which comprises Caribbean migrants and their descendants. This book shows how the development of the Spiritual Baptist religion in Canada has been shaped by the immigration experiences of church members, the large majority of whom are women, and it examines the ways in which religious experiences have mediated the members' experiences of migration and everyday life in Canada. This Spot of Ground is based on a critical ethnography, with in-depth interviews and participant observations of church services and other ritual activities, including baptism and pilgrimage and field research in Trinidad that explores the transnational linkages with Spiritual Baptists there. The book addresses theoretical and methodological issues also, including the development of perspectives suitable for examining diasporic African religious and cultural expressions characterized by transnational migration, an emphasis on oral tradition as the repository of cultural history, and linguistic and cultural hybridity. This Spot of Ground contributes new information to the study of Caribbean religion and culture in the diaspora, providing a detailed examination of the significance of religion in the immigration process and identity and community formations of Caribbean people in Canada.

Religious Studies Over the last thirty years African American voices and perspectives have become essential to the study of the various theological disciplines. Writing out of their particular position in the North American context, African American thinkers have contributed significantly to biblical studies, theology, church history, ethics, sociology of religion, homiletics, pastoral care, and a number of other fields. Frequently the work of these African American scholars is brought together in the seminary curriculum under the rubric of the black church studies class.
