The Donner Party has taken its place in American history as the stuff of legend. A tale of hope, desperation, colonial expansion, starvation, and the shocking lengths human beings can be pushed to for survival. The struggles of the group provide an opportunity to conduct demographic analysis of who lived and who died, offering insights specifically into the survival rate of different groups in a cold weather, starvation scenario. Additionally, the story of the Donner Party was adopted as both inspirational and cautionary tale by proponents of American expansion and Manifest Destiny. A review of the origins of Manifest Destiny and how the movement used the Donner Party to influence American identity in the second half of the 19th century provides some interesting insights into what inspired thousands of would-be pioneers to venture into the unknown despite the skills and experience necessary to live in the wilderness. The Franklin Expedition of 1845 is an enduring mystery that has captured public imagination for nearly two centuries. Recent research and Inuit testimony have provided long-awaited insights into the final days of the crew and the struggles they faced. This book takes a close look at the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, provides a review of previous Royal Navy Expeditions that set the stage for the Franklin tragedy, and explores the methodology and technologies employed by the Netsilik Inuit who have survived and thrived in the region where the Franklin Expedition met its gruesome end. The critical decision made by Captain Francis Crozier to abandon the ships in April of 1848 and attempt to walk across Kikertak (King William Island) culminated in a torturous effort by the sick and weakened crew; they interacted with the Netsilik, hunted wild game, and journeyed hundreds of kilometers pulling heavy sledges loaded with supplies and their critically ill comrades. Their desperate march south ended with the ultimate act of desperation: the survivors were forced to eat the corpses of their fallen crewmates.

Surviving the Shadow Pandemic: The Mental Health Implications of COVID-19 is a collection of research essays by students of Canadian universities exploring themes related to mental illness, discrimination, and the link between physical and mental health. Throughout the course of the book, a number of questions will be explored; for instance, how have lockdown procedures and social distancing affected mental health? How are ethnic minorities and members of the LGBTQIA+ community differentially affected by the pandemic in terms of mental illness outcomes? How does contracting the virus change these outcomes? Only just recently has it begun to be understood that mental illnesses are both very real and very serious. In particular, those living with schizophrenia have often been ostracized and discriminated against by society as a result of poor understanding of their condition. While portrayed in the media as violent, individuals with schizophrenia are in reality more likely to experience violence against them. In an effort to bring attention to the little known details of schizophrenia, Over the Edge and Into the Deep End: Schizophrenia and the Bounds of the Human Mind presents psychological research on a variety of aspects of the illness as well as interviews with Dr. Austin Mardon, a decorated researcher living with schizophrenia and his wife, Catherine Mardon, who works as a lawyer specializing in cases involving mental illness. What cognitive, biological, and sociocultural factors predispose one to the illness? What treatments are available and how do they work?
