"Paco Yunque" un racconto peruviano drammatico, dal finale amaro. Il testo conosciutissimo e molto diffuso nei paesi ispanofoni, anche sotto forma di riduzioni cinematografiche e rappresentazioni teatrali. L'autore stesso, famoso per la sua produzione poetica, considerato un vate, non soltanto nazionale, ma anche panamericano e di grande rilievo internazionale. La storia ha un chiaro intento didattico ed una denuncia sociale, in linea con le idee marxiste di Vallejo, le sue umili origini andine, la sua esperienza di lavoro in una piantagione e d'insegnante, la sua personale sensibilit , espressa in questi suoi versi, purtroppo premonitori della sua morte a Parigi in un giorno di pioggia. "... Cesar Vallejo morto, lo picchiavano/ tutti senza che avesse fatto loro niente/ gli davano addosso sodo con il bastone e sodo/ anche con una corda, sono testimoni/ i gioved e le ossa degli omeri/ la solitudine, la pioggia, le strade." La storia descrive in modo spietato episodi di bullismo. E se l'ambientazione quella del secolo scorso, gli interrogativi che l'autore fa esprimere al protagonista o le sottolineature morali pronunciate in prima persona da Vallejo stesso, cos come le dinamiche tra i personaggi, stimolano, senza dubbio, la riflessione su un tema sempre attuale. Gli altri racconti di questa raccolta formano un corollario che approfondisce e allarga il discorso cominciato in Paco Yunque. Le immagini de' "Il bambino del carro trionfale" e "I due soras" descrivono lo stato di natura dei semplici della Terra e dei bambini, non ancora corrotti dalla dura "legge" (morale o religiosa) degli uomini. Infine ne' "Il vincitore", il debole, prima schiacciato dal pi forte, ora schiacciato dalla stessa violenza che ha usato contro il pi forte. Tuttavia Vallejo in "Muro Nordovest", breve racconto-riflessione di un carcerato sulla giustizia praticata dagli uomini, ci esorta: "osservate meglio con il cuore "

Fue publicada por Pedro Barrantes Castro en su serie La novela peruana publicaci n quincenal ilustrada (Lima, 16 de mayo de 1923).

Since his death, these poems have usually been referred to as the "Poemas humanos" after the title of one of the posthumous volumes. This Selected Poems draws on both of the volumes published by Shearsman Books in 2005: "Trilce" and the "Complete Later Poems 1923-1938", and adds to this selection a group of early poems from "The Black Heralds", thus giving an overview of the author's career and a sample of the whole range of his remarkable work. The translations are by the prize-winning Irish poet-translator, Michael Smith, and the Peruvian scholar, Valentino Gianuzzi.

Throughout his life, C sar Vallejo (1892-1938) focused on human suffering and the isolation of people victimized by inexplicable forces. One of the great Spanish language poets, he merged radical politics and language consciousness, resulting in the first examples of a truly new world poetry. The Black Heralds is Vallejo's first book and contains a wide range of poems, from love sonnets in which he struggles to free his erotic life from the bounds of Spanish Catholicism to the linguistically inventive sequence, "Imperial Nostalgias," where he parodies with considerable savagery the pastoral romanticism of Indian and rural life. In this bilingual volume, translator Rebecca Seiferle attempts to undo the "colonization" of Vallejo in other translations. C sar Vallejo (1892-1938) was born in Peru to a family of mixed Spanish and native descent. He wrote two books of poetry, the second of which was partly composed during a short prison term. Disappointed by the reception of his poetry in his own country, Vallejo moved to Paris, where he became active in Marxist politics and the antifascist campaign in Spain, while publishing essays, political -articles, a play, and short stories. Vallejo died in Paris, in utter poverty, on the day Franco's armies entered Madrid.
